Heritage NL

Heritage NL Heritage NL - safeguarding our historic places and living heritage since 1984.

Established by the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador in 1984, Heritage NL is managed by a government-appointed board of directors with representation from across the province. Heritage NL has a mandate to help preserve the rich heritage of Newfoundland and Labrador. In addition to encouraging and supporting the preservation of the province’s architectural heritage, we actively promote the sa

feguarding of our rich intangible cultural heritage. We do this through programs that recognize the province’s built and intangible heritage, by providing financial support for built heritage preservation, and through educational and outreach initiatives. Heritage NL designates Registered Heritage Structures in the province, which makes them eligible for restoration grants. As well, it designates Registered Heritage Districts to support their preservation, management and development. Our educational and outreach efforts include an annual Heritage Poster Contest targeted to K-12 students and a program to assist municipalities to inventory cultural resources and identify measures to protect and develop them. In addition to our programs we offer advice and information on a variety of topics including: preserving and restoring heritage buildings; cultural mapping; protecting heritage districts; utilizing heritage resources for community development; and undertaking community oral history and intangible cultural heritage projects.

Heritage NL is gearing up for several events over the weekend and early next week! We are taking Nan & Pop's Cookbook workshops to the west coast with events in Norris Point, Port au Choix, and Cow Head.

Nan and Pop’s Cookbook is a project to celebrate, and promote the benefits of healthy and traditional recipes for wellbeing. At the workshop community members come together to make recipe pages and share traditional food knowledge. The workshop will see people create their own scrapbook style recipe pages; and scan their traditional recipes to be shared with future generations. Snacks, and drinks provided! We also encourage community members to bring their photos of garden parties, mug ups, birthday parties, and family meals to be scanned.

Heritage NL was delighted to attend the community brunch in Renews this past Sunday, August 16th, to present an updated plaque to Holy Apostles RC Church. The Renews-Cappahayden Church Committee just wrapped up a week of celebrations marking the 150th anniversary of the laying of the church cornerstone and the 99th anniversary of Our Lady of Lourdes Grotto. Holy Apostles RC Church was designated a Registered Heritage Structure by Heritage NL in 1993.

Only a few spots left!

Learn to Pull Ivy and Make Baskets with Lori McCarthy (Food Culture Place) and Dale Jarvis (Heritage NL)!

This workshop is taking place at O'Brien Farm and is a full day of hands-on learning. We'll begin with an invasive ivy pull to help make way for indigenous plants, then show you how to make a hoop-style hen basket with the ivy you've collected. It's a sustainable way to repurpose a harmful plant—and you'll go home with a rustic ivy basket of your own making.

Heritage NL is excited to present a new plaque to the owners of 32 Queen's Road in St. John's.

Likely built in the mid-1800s, only the outer walls of this gable-roofed duplex survived the Great Fire of 1892. A rare surviving example of residential masonry construction in St. John's, this Queen Anne Revival style house is unique for its use of brick and stone, materials rarely seen in St. John's residential buildings of the period. Notable owners include merchant James Knight, his wife Mary, and tailor William Chafe, proprietor of W.L. Chafe and Sons, and his wife, Jane.
