To the residents of St. Lawrence,
Our town has always been built on hard work, pride, and people who care deeply about their community. That passion is important, and constructive criticism and differing opinions are part of any healthy community. However, there is a line that must never be crossed and it is a line that the vast majority never reach let alone cross. Unfortunately, there are the few that feel they have the right to demean and belittle others in an attempt to get their way regardless of rules, bylaws and regulations.
No one should have to endure intimidation, bullying, harassment, or the invasion of their personal space simply because they come to work each day to serve the residents of St. Lawrence. Paying taxes does not give anyone the right to mistreat employees, elected officials, or volunteers. Respect is not optional; it is the foundation of a strong and successful community.
Unfortunately, many of the attacks and complaints that have become commonplace are driven by social media posts containing misinformation or comments from individuals who do not live here and/or who often do not have all of the facts. Repeating untrue information only creates division and unfairly damages the reputation of those who are working hard on behalf of our town.
Our staff are dedicated people. They are mothers, fathers, neighbours, friends, and members of this community. They deserve to be treated with dignity and respect. Constant criticism over trivial matters and personal attacks take a toll on good people and make it increasingly difficult to recruit and retain the quality employees that every community needs.
If we expect to attract capable and professional individuals to serve St. Lawrence, then we must also create an environment where they feel valued and supported.
We can disagree without being disagreeable. We can ask questions without making accusations. And we can hold one another accountable without tearing one another down.
The future of St. Lawrence depends not only on the decisions we make, but on the kind of community we choose to be. Let us choose respect, civility, and kindness, and work together to build a stronger community for everyone. Too often good people hurt good people because of self-interest. Always consider, “Is that the way I would want to be treated if I was in the other person’s shoes?” We have to do better.
