There’s something powerful about hearing directly from the educators and school leaders who are bringing Lions Quest to life.

Tracy Casselman, Principal at H.E. Bourgoin Middle School in Bonnyville, Alberta, shares her perspective on what Lions Quest can bring to a school community.

This is what implementation is really about: not simply delivering lessons, but creating a school where relationships, connection and social-emotional skills are part of how students and adults learn and grow together.

One simple SEL strategy to try as routines begin again: Ask one more question.

When a young person tells you something, resist the urge to immediately give advice, solve the problem or move on.

Instead, try:

“Tell me more.”
“How did that make you feel?”
“What do you think you might do next?”

That extra question communicates something powerful:

I’m listening. What you think matters.

It also gives young people an opportunity to practise identifying emotions, reflecting, problem-solving and making decisions.

Sometimes supporting SEL starts with something as simple as being curious. ❤️

Imagine walking into a new classroom and not knowing where you fit.

Maybe your best friend is in another class. Maybe you’re new to the school. Maybe summer was difficult. Or maybe you’re simply wondering:

Will anyone notice me?
Will I have someone to sit with?
Will I belong here?

Then an adult greets you by name.

Someone invites you into a conversation.

A classmate makes room.

Nothing dramatic happened — but suddenly, the day feels a little different.

Belonging is built through moments like these.

As we approach a new school year, let’s remember that before young people are ready to learn, it helps to know there is a place for them.

You don’t have to see the impact right away for it to matter.

A kind word.
A patient response.
An invitation to join in.
A caring adult who listens.
A moment when someone says, “I believe in you.”

We may never know which small interaction becomes a turning point for a young person.

As educators, families and communities prepare for a new season, it’s a good reminder:

Every connection is an opportunity to make a difference.

Keep showing up. Keep connecting. Keep believing in young people. ❤️

It's great to spend time with the Lions Club International Foundation (LCIF) team for Canada this am. Did you know LCIF have invested $2.3 million ($US) to support Lions Quest implementation in Canada over the years? That support has made a positive difference in the lives of more than 3,000,000 young people. Imagine how much more we can do!

Invite someone to join the game.
Help a neighbour.

Thank someone who made your summer better.
Do something kind — just because.

Summer may be winding down, but learning never really took a vacation.

Every game played, new experience tried, disagreement worked through, friendship strengthened and challenge overcome has given young people opportunities to practise important social and emotional skills.

Empathy. Communication. Problem-solving. Resilience. Teamwork.

SEL happens everywhere — not just in the classroom.

As we enjoy these final weeks of summer, let’s celebrate all the ways young people have been learning and growing along the way.

The last weeks of summer have a rhythm all their own. The days are still warm, but there’s a hint of change in the air. Routines are starting to return, calendars are filling up, and a new season is just around the corner.

Before the rush begins, there’s still time to slow down, connect and enjoy the little moments together.

Those moments matter. Conversations, shared experiences, laughter and simply spending time together all help strengthen the relationships young people need to thrive.

So before we say goodbye to summer, let’s make room for a little more connection, kindness and fun. ❤️
