The Town of Stavely is aware of recent social media posts suggesting that Council has approved or intends to proceed with the construction of a new Town Office. These statements are incorrect.
At this time, Council has made no decision to construct a new Town Office, nor are there any immediate plans to proceed with such a project.
As part of its annual budgeting process, Council routinely considers and allocates capital funding for the long-term maintenance, renovation, or potential replacement of municipal infrastructure, including the Town Office. This is a standard asset management practice intended to ensure the Town is prepared for future infrastructure needs and is not an indication that a project has been approved.
The current Town Office was constructed in 1920 and, like many aging municipal facilities, continues to require ongoing assessment and investment. Council's long-term financial planning also considers the Town's obligations under Asset Retirement Obligations (ARO) legislation, which requires municipalities to identify and plan for the future costs associated with aging municipal assets.
Should the need arise in the future, Council's first priority would be to evaluate whether existing Town-owned facilities could be repurposed or utilized before considering the construction of a new building.
It is also important to understand that capital projects are funded separately from the Town's operating budget. Capital planning does not automatically result in increases to annual operating taxes, and setting aside funds for future infrastructure needs is considered prudent financial management.
If Council ever reaches the point of considering a significant change to the Town Office, the proposal would be discussed publicly through the regular Council process. Residents would be informed and provided with opportunities to ask questions and provide input before any major decision is made.
The Town remains committed to transparent decision-making and encourages residents to obtain information from official Town communications.
