Our fire protection services for this region is at risk. We potentially will lose our fire protection if the current crisis on our Regional fire Committee is not resolved.
There is a 7 member oversight Committee in place since 2011 to direct the operations of the fire department. This Committee is compromised of volunteers from our coverage area of Steady Brook, Little Rapids and Humber Village. There is an oversight document, Memorandum of Agreement in place since the signing in 2011.
The format is set up to alternate member quantity of 7 with 4 from one community 3 from the other, this changes every 2 years.
Currently there are only 2 remaining volunteers on this committee, both from Little Rapids. No representation from Steady Brook or Humber Village.
At this point the Regional fire board is non functional and non operational, which leaves the fire department at risk of ceasing operations due to lack of oversight and direction from the regional fire committee.
Volunteers are needed immediately to fill the vacant seats on this committee. You do not need to be elected to a council or L*D to be on this committee. Any community resident can be on this committee to help the operations of the Fire services in this region.
Typically the committee meets monthly in person or virtually and emails to discuss items in between meetings.
Please contact the Town Clerk in Steady Brook Town Office if you would like to volunteer or request further information.
The loss of or fire services will significantly increase your property insurance costs in an unprotected area.
