PUBLIC ADVISORY: Earlier today, Bay St. George RCMP was advised that a historic military munition was discovered near St. George’s. That item was voluntarily turned over to the RCMP.

The item has been secured and will be continuously monitored until experts with the Department of National Defence can properly dispose of it. These experts have been already been engaged and will arrive in the province as soon as possible.

RCMP Newfoundland and Labrador is proceeding with an abundance of caution. Officers are currently going door-to-door in the immediate area surrounding the RCMP detachment on Oregon Drive in Stephenville, where the item is being stored, to advise residents of the risk and assist them in voluntarily evacuating the area, if they feel safer doing so.

The RCMP detachment in Stephenville will also be closed to the public until further notice. To report an incident that requires a police response, but is not an emergency, please contact the RCMP non-emergency line at 1-800-709-7267 (RCMP). In an emergency, always call 9-1-1.

Updates will be provided as new information is available.

How does the COSPAS-SARSAT system save lives? 🛰️

The COSPAS-SARSAT system uses a network of satellites to detect distress signals and pinpoint the sender’s location.

These alerts come from emergency beacons carried on:

Aircraft✈️
Maritime vessels 🚤
Hikers, hunters, and outdoor explorers 🥾

When a beacon is activated, the system quickly relays critical information to search and rescue teams, helping them respond faster and more accurately.

It’s a global safety network that makes a real difference.

Whether you need to evacuate or shelter at home, you need an emergency kit and a plan.

Knowing what to do can help make a real emergency situation less stressful for you and your household. Have a plan that includes what to do, where to go and how to stay connected.

Be prepared for at least 72 hours with a basic emergency kit. Include items such as food, water, batteries, a portable radio, important documents, and prescription medications. 🔦

Find tips on how to make emergency kits and plans on the Government of Canada’s website: https://www.canada.ca/en/public-health/services/emergency-preparedness.html

Newfoundland and Labrador has some of the most incredible scenery in the country and exploring it safely means coming prepared.

Here, weather can shift quickly, especially near the ocean. Fog, wind, and cold can move in fast, so checking the forecast and packing a few extra layers can help you stay ready for whatever the day brings.

Many trails in the province have limited or no cell service, so before you go, make sure someone knows your planned route and what time you’ll be back. A satellite device (like a SPOT) is a smart investment that can keep you and your group safe.

If you find yourself lost or injured, stay where you are and call for assistance if you can.

Bring water, snacks, a phone, a first-aid kit and something to help you navigate if cell service drops. If you’re near the shoreline, keep an eye on the tides and stay far back from wet or slippery rocks.

Enjoy the incredible trails our province has to offer by making safety your priority during every hike this season!
