Remembering 80 years ago today August 19, 1942 “The Dieppe Raid” involving so many of our local boys. Almost 1000 Canadian young men were killed on the beaches of Dieppe, France and almost 2000 taken prisoner.
It was called “The Darkest Day in History”. The biggest Slaughter in one day on Canadian records.
Note the Stettler Independent article on the 10th Anniversary of Dieppe, our local boys are listed at the bottom of the article.
It is with great sadness the loss of Johnny Welch and Bob Cornelssen, “ Killed In Action” on the beach of Dieppe.

The Legion is open on Saturdays at 4:00pm with cold beverages, snacks, meat draws, 50/50 draw, “chase the ace”, and very soon the pull tickets of old days! We have replaced our answering machine and can return calls again. Repairs to the “Bingo hall” are proceeding but the Back Trax and Dieppe Room are available for smaller groups. We will be closed for the upcoming Saturday July 30th to give our volunteers a break on the long weekend, but open again the following Saturday. Come in to the Legion for a good visit with old and new friends! Everyone is welcome to sign in (and don’t forget to renew your membership or apply for a new one) Stay tuned for more updates as we go!!

An important message from Dominion President Tom Irvine:

Dear Comrades,

Our collective sorrow has been further deepened by the recent discovery of hundreds of unmarked graves near the site of a former residential school for First Nations children, this time in Saskatchewan.

In Remembrance, and out of respect for all these souls, I am issuing a second national directive. I am asking all Branches to lower flags to half-mast for an indefinite period of mourning, starting today. An updated directive will be issued once this period ends.

We continue to join in spirit with our First Nations comrades to help them through this devastating time.

Our thoughts remain with all related families and communities.

Chers/Chères camarades,

Notre chagrin collectif s'est encore aggravé avec la découverte récente de centaines de tombes non marquées près du site d'un ancien pensionnat pour enfants des Premières nations, cette fois-ci en Saskatchewan.

En souvenir, et par respect pour toutes ces âmes, je viens par la présente publier une deuxième directive nationale. Je demande à toutes les filiales de mettre les drapeaux en berne pour une période de deuil indéfinie, et ce, à compter d'aujourd'hui. Une nouvelle directive suivra en temps opportun.

Nous continuons de nous joindre en esprit à nos camarades des Premières nations pour les aider à traverser cette période particulièrement difficile.

Puissent nos pensées accompagner toutes les familles et les communautés touchées.
