Association of Communities Against Abuse - ACAA Providing specialized services to East Central Albertans impacted by sexual assault and child sexual abuse since 1990.

In the late 1980s, a group of people from East Central Alberta began talking about the significant number of child sexual abuse cases they were seeing and the lack of services available to these survivors. This 'talking' led to the formation of a community-based board representing all of East Central Alberta, and a treatment service provided by professionally trained therapists. In 1997, a formal

preventive education program was established, and the child sexual abuse scope was extended to include emotional and physical abuse. ACAA currently provides preventive education programs, supportive intervention and treatment services.

ACAA is honoured to partner with CPS on an independent VACR of sexual assault investigations. The review process is conducted by trained, ACAA front-line sexual violence advocates who are fully independent from law enforcement. Our team has received specialized VACR training from Sunny Marriner, a nationally recognized leader in survivor-centered case review.
Independent case review provides opportunities to strengthen investigative practices, ensure survivor rights and needs remain central throughout the process.
By working together while maintaining independent oversight, we are committed to continuous shared learning and improvements to support those impacted by sexual violence.

The Camrose Police Service recently met with the Association of Communities Against Abuse (ACAA) as part of our quarterly review process.

As part of this partnership, ACAA conducts an independent review of Camrose Police Service sexual assault investigations to help ensure best practices, effective investigative techniques, and trauma-informed approaches are consistently applied. These collaborative reviews strengthen our commitment to providing compassionate, victim-centered service to survivors.

The Association of Communities Against Abuse (ACAA) is an organization that provides specialized, trauma-informed support to individuals impacted by sexual violence across East Central Alberta. Their services include counselling, criminal justice navigation, advocacy, education, and community outreach, helping survivors access support and navigate the healing process.

Congratulations to our former CEO, Deb Tomlinson, who will be receiving an Honorary Doctor of Laws from Mount Royal University.

This well-deserved recognition reflects more than 30 years of leadership, collaboration, and commitment to ending sexual violence and improving access to specialized services and supports across Alberta.

As one of the early leaders who helped shape Alberta's sexual violence sector, Deb's vision and commitment have transformed access to services and supports for survivors across Alberta. Her leadership has helped build a stronger, more coordinated response to sexual violence through advocacy, collaboration, public awareness, and systems change.

Beyond her many accomplishments, Deb's greatest legacy may be the countless people she has mentored and inspired. Her ability to bring people together around a shared vision has strengthened organizations, communities, and systems across Alberta and Canada.

On behalf of AASAS, our network of sexual assault services, partners, and the many individuals whose lives have been positively impacted by her work, congratulations, Deb. We are grateful for your leadership and proud to celebrate this milestone with you.
