Do you know the history of the Cree code talkers?

These Canadian soldiers had a very important job during the Second World War: translating sensitive radio messages into Cree. The messages were received by another code talker, who translated the messages back into English.

Sworn to secrecy, they prevented the enemy from gaining important information – and helped keep our soldiers on the frontlines safe.

Pictured are John Smith and his stepbrothers Henry, Peter, Charles and Frank Tomkins. John, Charles and Peter all served as code talkers.

This is Private Hikogoro Inouye.

Eager to serve, in August 1916 he went to Calgary to enlist in the Canadian Expeditionary Force.

Back then, many willing young people were turned away because of their race or ethnicity.

Calgary was one of the few places in Canada that allowed people of Asian descent to enlist.

After two years of serving, he was killed in an air raid in Étaples, France, in May 1918.

We remember his perseverance and sacrifice.

Retired major and critical care nurse Annie Tétreault has served in a war zone.

Not once, but many times.

From 2004 to 2009, she served three tours in Afghanistan – first in Kabul, then in Kandahar.

“When I left the second time, I knew for a fact that we were going to lose people. I thought I might be one of them.”

After 21 years of dedicated service, she released from the military.

On , we celebrate people like Annie, who care for people at home and around the world.

May is Jewish Heritage Month.

It’s a time to shine a light on the contributions of Canadian Veterans like Alex Polowin, who joined the navy at just 16 years old.

He served as an able seaman in the Battle of the Atlantic and the D-Day landings.

He remembers long nights on the English Channel, hunting enemy warships. With him were his shipmates and comrades-in-arms – and his harmonica. ♪

It takes a lot of courage to be first.

Lieutenant-Colonel (Retired) Maryse Carmichael is a woman of firsts.

A pilot and flying instructor, she was the first woman to join the Snowbirds aerobatic team in 2001 as a pilot.

She didn’t stop there. In 2010, she became the first woman to be their Commander and lead 431 Air Demonstration Squadron.

Her story inspires us to reach new heights. ✈️

Corporal Filip Konowal was born in Ukraine and fought for Canada in the First World War.

In August 1917, he led soldiers in attacks during the Battle of Hill 70 in France. As German machine gun positions were taking a heavy toll on his soldiers, he bravely rushed forward and charged at them.

He was awarded the Victoria Cross for his actions.

We remember his courage – now more than ever.

• Warrant Officer Dennis Raymond Brown
• Corporal Joseph Dany Olivier Fortin
• Corporal Kenneth Chad O'Quinn

They died when their armoured vehicle hit an improvised explosive device outside Kandahar City.

We will never forget their sacrifices.
