FLAGS

When the City of Stratford raises a flag on the community flagpole in front of City Hall, people notice.

In fact, depending on the flag, we often get comments not just from people in Stratford, but also from individuals across Canada and around the world.

Sometimes the comments are positive and supportive.
Sometimes they’re not.

Here are few flag-flying facts that will hopefully help to provide a better understanding of when and why we raise a particular flag.

First, and foremost, the Canadian flag is always in the position of honour at the top of City Hall.

No other flag flies above it.
No other flag flies with it.

There is a separate community flagpole in front of City Hall, and that’s the one we use for the City of Stratford’s municipal flag, and occasionally those of other community organizations or non-profit groups.

It's important to note that the flags on the community flagpole are flown by request.

Organizations submit that request through the Clerk’s office, and then it goes to City Council for consideration.

If approved, the flag (provided by the organization) is flown on a particular day, week or month, often with a proclamation.

For example, next Monday (August 31), we will be flying the Overdose Awareness Flag in recognition of International Overdose Awareness Day. This is at the request of the Canadian Mental Health Association Huron Perth.

The next day, we will be flying the Gold Ribbon flag, at the request of ChildCan, to recognize September as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.

So when we fly a flag in front of City Hall, it is a simple but visible show of support for a community organization or group, to recognize a date, an event or an occasion of significance.

CONSTRUCTION UPDATE AUG. 25, 2026: WATERLOO STREET

Work on the resurfacing of Waterloo Street continues.

The contractor is expected to finish paving the section of Waterloo between Douro Street and Albert Street tomorrow (Wednesday, Aug. 26), and will then begin work on the section between Ontario Street and Lakeside Drive.

Weather permitting, work on that next section is scheduled to begin Thursday, Aug. 27.

The southbound lanes of Waterloo Street between Ontario Street and Mornington Street will be closed to through traffic Thursday, for approximately three weeks.

Signs will be in place to detour traffic around the construction area, along Mornington Street to Huron Street.

Northbound traffic on Waterloo Street between Ontario Street and Mornington Street will be maintained.

Local traffic access will also be maintained for vehicles travelling:

⬅️Westbound on Cobourg Street (one way) across Waterloo Street
➡️Eastbound on Water Street (one way) across Waterloo Street from Veterans Drive

TREASURE HUNT WEEKEND

This is another Treasure Hunt in the City of Stratford - an opportunity for residents to recycle any unwanted household items simply by placing them at the curb.

Materials can be put out starting at 4 p.m. Friday for anyone in the community to collect. Any unclaimed items must be removed by the curb by 3 p.m. on Sunday.

Please remember not to leave any items you want to keep, including children’s toys or bicycles, near the curb during the Treasure Hunt weekend.

The goal of the event is to promote recycling and keep materials with some useful life out of Stratford’s landfill site.

If you miss this Treasure Hunt, don't worry. There's one more planned for this year on the weekend of Sept. 25-27.

With fall just around the corner, the Stratford Lions Pool is switching to its post-season swim schedule.

Here are the new hours for our daily swim programs, starting Monday, Aug. 24:

🔹 12:30 – 1:30 p.m. – Lengths and Family Swim
🔹 2-4 p.m. – Open Swim
🔹 4:15 – 5:15 p.m. – Lengths and Family Swim
🔹 5:30-7:30 p.m. – Open Swim

ALLMAN ARENA PARKING LOT CLOSED NEXT WEEK

In order to safely complete some exterior painting at the William Allman Memorial Arena, the parking lot at the facility will be closed from Monday, Aug. 24 until Sunday, Aug. 30.

The exterior access public washrooms at the arena will still be available during that time.
