Important changes to Canada's Criminal Code are coming into effect, marking one of the most significant updates to laws protecting survivors of intimate partner violence and gender-based violence in many years.

The legislation, commonly known as Bailey's Law, is named in honour of Bailey McCourt, a B.C. woman who was killed by a former intimate partner. Her family's advocacy played an important role in bringing these reforms forward.

Some of the key changes include:
- Recognizing femicide as first-degree murder when the victim is the accused person's intimate partner and the death occurs within or following a pattern of coercive control, rather than as an isolated act of violence.
- Creating a new Criminal Code offence for coercive control, recognizing patterns of intimidation, isolation, threats, and manipulation before violence becomes physical.
- Making it a crime to threaten to share intimate images, including AI-generated sexual deepfakes.
- Strengthening criminal harassment laws.
- Expanding protections and support for victims throughout the justice process.

These legal changes are an important step, but laws alone cannot prevent femicide. Survivors must be believed and have access to safety, housing and community-based gender-based violence services.
