ARCA is pleased to announce that its 2027 National Conference will be held November 3-5, 2027, in Victoria, BC, on lək̓ʷəŋən Traditional Territory.

We are thrilled to be partnering with Open Space Arts Society, the Regroupement des centres d’artistes autogérés du Québec (RCAAQ), and the Pacific Association of Artist-Run Centres (PAARC) for this event. The conference will bring together artists, cultural workers, and advocates from across the country, creating a space to share perspectives and knowledge from across Canada’s artist-run landscape. This will be a space not only for dialogue and exchange, but also for reflection on the role of artist-run culture within this evolving landscape.

In preparation for the 2025 year, ARCA has developed a digital survey to collect data on the artist-run centres across the country. All artist-run centres are invited to complete this survey. Your participation will help us paint a clearer picture of the challenges, opportunities, and evolving dynamics within this sector of the arts community.

The information collected through this survey will play a key role in shaping our 2025 conference, informing advocacy efforts, and supporting other initiatives aimed at strengthening the arts community.

ARCA, AXENÉO7 and SAW Centre , in collaboration with the Indigenous Curatorial Collective/ Collectif des commissaires autochtones and the Association des groupes en arts visuels francophones (AGAVF), are excited to announce the biennial gathering Against the Current, taking place in Ottawa-Gatineau from June 11 to 14, 2025.

Against the Current will be hosted at the NCC River House, the Ottawa Art Gallery’s Alma Duncan Salon, AXENÉO7 and SAW, connecting delegates to important cultural and natural sites on both sides of the Kichi Sibi (Ottawa River) while recognizing and honouring the Algonquin land on which we will gather.

The conference will present a rich program of events and professional activities for delegates, the arts community and the general public alike, including keynotes, panels, discussions, workshops, collaborative sessions, advocacy campaigns, networking events, performances, art happenings and exhibition openings. A wide range of topics will be covered, providing opportunities to all cultural workers connected with the Canadian and international artist-run centre network.

Last June, ARCA representatives had the privilege to attend the IMAA conference, Temporal Anchorings: A National Media Arts Gathering in Halifax this summer. The gathering itself was a huge success bringing together many representatives from all over Canada to discuss the current needs of artists, artist-run centres and specifically independent media arts organizations.

ARCA Executive Director, Clayton Windatt, was invited to co-facilitate a panel discussion on advocacy. This discussion revealed a great amount of similarities to the feedback gathered by ARCA from previous events, calling for action in relation to the lack of support given by the government of Canada.

ARCA takes this very seriously and has begun laying plans to support the Canadian Arts Coalition’s Day on the Hill, taking place on November 19th, 2024. ARCA will be bringing representatives to Ottawa to meet with Government representatives and advocate for increased rights to Artist and artist-run centers. If anyone is interested in attending or has plans to attend, please contact [email protected] as we will be coordinating together to ensure that artist-run representatives engage each other while on site.

Overall, the IMAA conference was well programmed, giving lots of time for discussions and community building through shared issues and collaborative planning. Moving forward ARCA looks to engage more with IMAA and solidify existing partnerships to support each other on an ongoing basis.

Reminder that the call for submissions for partnerships with ARCA is open. If you would like to partner with us to host our national conference, or a smaller-scale gathering, submit your application using the link in our bio. The cut-off date to submit for events taking place in 2025 is June 30th, 2024.

While submissions are welcomed year-round, those received after the end of June of each year will be considered for the following year's events (ie. submissions received after June 30th 2024 will be considered for events in 2026, etc…). We encourage all interested parties to submit their proposals by June 30th to ensure consideration for 2025 gatherings. 🔗 Link in bio!
