🚧 PROVINCIAL GOVERNMENT TRAFFIC ADVISORY

The Government of Prince Edward Island has advised that the fourth leg of the Reads Corner intersection will open to traffic on Thursday, September 3.

The intersection will now operate as a four-legged intersection, with each approach featuring a dedicated left-turn lane and a second lane for through and right-turn traffic.

Motorists are encouraged to use caution as they become familiar with the new intersection configuration. Please slow down and obey traffic control personnel working in the area.

ℹ️ Please note: This traffic advisory and infrastructure project are being provided by the Provincial Government. The City of Summerside is sharing this information to help keep local residents and motorists informed.

SUMMERSIDE YOUTH FACING IMPAIRED DRIVING CHARGES RESULTING FROM SINGLE-VEHICLE COLLISION

On September 1 at approximately 5:20 AM, Summerside Police Services received a 911 call reporting a single vehicle collision in the area of the Central Street roundabout.

Police attended the scene and located a vehicle which had collided with a utility pole on Central Street. The driver, a male under the age of 18, was identified and subsequently arrested for impaired driving.

The driver provided two samples of breath, both of which were twice the legal limit. As a result, the vehicle was impounded, and the driver was served a driving prohibition.

The accused was later released to the care of a parent, and is scheduled to appear in court at a later date to answer impaired driving-related charges.

Although the vehicle and utility pole sustained extensive damage, no injuries were reported from the collision.

Summerside Police Services thanks the public for their continued cooperation with efforts to combat impaired driving.

👀 Stay alert and keep your eyes on the road.
🛑 Yield to pedestrians. Always stop at crosswalks when kids are crossing.
🚗 Slow down in school zones.

Parents:
🚶‍♂️ Teach your children to stop and look both ways before crossing the road.
🗣️Talk to your children about following crossing guard's directions and to use pedestrian pushbuttons when applicable.

🚌👮 With the new school year right around the corner, an important reminder from all of PEI's policing agencies along with the Departments of Justice, Education, Transportation and our island school bus drivers.

Keeping kids safe starts with all of us.

If you witness a vehicle passing a school bus illegally, note the plate number, vehicle and driver description, time and place, and call 9-1-1.

Talk to your kids about bus stop safety: arrive early, look both ways, and stay visible to the bus driver.

🔴 Flashing RED: Treat it like a stop sign. Come to a complete stop, check that the intersection is clear, and proceed when safe.

🟡 Flashing YELLOW: Slow down and proceed with caution. You do not have to stop unless necessary, but you must watch for vehicles and pedestrians.

Motorists facing the flashing red must yield to traffic facing the flashing yellow.

Intersection Lights at Granville Street for access to County Fair Mall and Granville Street Plaza are currently malfunctioning and operating on a flash:

👮🏻‍♂️👮🏻‍♂️ Presenting Cst. Maxime Bénard-Bartlett and Cst. Cory Gallant!

Today, the Atlantic Police Academy graduated Squad 124, which included both Cst. Bénard-Bartlett and Cst. Gallant, who join Summerside Police Services as graduates of the Cadet Recruitment Program, delivered in partnership with the Province of PEI’s Department of Justice and Public Safety.

In addition, Cst. Gallant was named Squad 124's valedictorian, as well as earning the following awards:
🎖 Chief David P. MacKinnon Award (Cadet who best displays leadership through teamwork;
🎖 New Glasgow Regional Police Leadership in Fitness Award (Cadet who best displays leadership in fitness)

As part of the ceremonies, Chief of Police Jason Blacquiere was also a guest speaker for the graduating class.

🚘🟡 MVC: Water Street East at the intersection of Cairns Boulevard is reduced to one lane due to a motor vehicle collision.

Please choose alternate routes if able or expect delays.
