Under The Same Sun

Under The Same Sun Welcome to the official page for Under The Same Sun. We have allocated a minimum of $400,000 USD for this period alone.

Under The Same Sun (UTSS) exists to promote, via advocacy and education, the wellbeing of persons often marginalized and misunderstood. UTSS’ major goal is to promote the wellbeing of persons with albinism in Tanzania through the provision of education scholarships to children, youth and adults at all levels – from primary to post secondary institutions. Our Education Scholarship Fund (ESF) is off

ering grants to persons with albinism in many regions of Tanzania for the academic year 2013-2014. Our target is to reach over 300 beneficiaries, placing them in the best and safest educational environments Tanzania has to offer. NEW: we are pleased to announce that we have reached that target as of early 2014.

A reported abduction of an 18-months-old child with albinism in Madagascar and the killing of a 36-year-old man with albinism in Malawi highlight the continuing dangers faced by persons with albinism across the region.

✨ Today, we celebrate the strength, diversity, and resilience of Africa and its people.

At the Africa Albinism Network, we envision a continent where persons with albinism live free from brutality, discrimination, and exclusion, an Africa where everyone can participate fully and equally in society.

We also applaud the efforts of African countries in advancing National Action Plans aligned with the African Union’s Plan of Action to end attacks and strengthen protections for persons with albinism. 👏🏽📣

As we mark , we reaffirm our commitment to dignity, inclusion, human rights, and collective action across the continent.

Together, we celebrate our shared humanity and the unique beauty that defines Africa and its people. ✨

Because of the lack of melanin in their skin, people with albinism are especially vulnerable to sun damage and skin cancer, particularly in places like Tanzania where the sun is intense year-round. That’s why ongoing skin care and protection are such an important part of UTSS’s work.

UTSS students received professional skin check-ups in Kahama and Mwanza. We’re happy to share that all students examined were found to be in good condition. Students also received sunscreen and protective hats to help keep them safe and healthy throughout the school term.

These moments of care matter.

They help students stay healthy, confident, and focused on what matters most: learning, growing, and building their future.

Sunscreen is not a luxury. Sunscreen is medicine.

Speaking at the 47th Session of ACERWC, 16-year-old advocate Mwape Chimpampa from Zambia reminded us of a critical reality, for children with albinism, access to sunscreen is not optional, it is essential for survival.

In many parts of Africa, the lack of consistent, affordable sun protection is a life-or-death issue. Beyond social stigma and security risks, skin cancer remains a leading cause of early death—a tragedy that is entirely preventable with the right interventions.

We are urging Member States to:
✅ Health: Classifying sunscreen as an essential medicine and ensuring it is freely or affordably available in all communities.

✅ Protection: Implementing the AU Plan of Action on Albinism (2021–2031) to address discrimination and protect children with albinism.

✅ Climate Justice: Addressing the disproportionate impact of rising temperatures and UV radiation on children with albinism, particularly in rural areas.

Health is a human right. No child should lose their future to a preventable condition.

For many students with albinism, life has been defined by barriers.

Barriers to education. To safety. To simply being included.

But at Under The Same Sun, we believe every student deserves more than just access to school. They deserve the chance to grow in confidence, discover their potential, and experience joy.

This quarter, students who excelled academically were rewarded with a trip to Serengeti National Park. It was more than a celebration. It was a moment to explore, to learn, and to see a bigger world beyond the challenges they have faced.

These experiences matter. They build confidence. They spark curiosity. They expand what feels possible.

Because the goal is not just for students with albinism to succeed in school. It is for them to believe in their future.
