Today I attended the Surrey Police Board meeting and spoke with the media about the board’s proposed directive that would restrict the Chief Constable and senior officers from speaking openly on public safety issues.

Surrey residents deserve transparency, accountability, and the truth not silence. Our police must be able to speak honestly about the challenges facing our city, especially when public safety is on the line.

I will continue standing up for the men and women of the Surrey Police Service and for every Surrey resident who deserves to feel safe.

Four months before Surrey voters go to the polls, Brenda Locke’s board is moving to gag Surrey’s police.

A directive on today’s Surrey Police Board agenda would stop the Chief Constable and senior officers from speaking openly about public safety.

Surrey residents deserve transparency, not silence. Public safety should never be controlled for political convenience.

As Mayor, I will reverse this. No officer in Surrey should ever be gagged for telling the public the truth about safety in our city.

Meet George Duncan.

The $400,000 man. Richmond taxpayers paid him more than that in a single year, salary and benefits, per the city’s own financial report.

Now he sits on the Surrey Police Board. That board voted to fire Chief Lipinski behind closed doors, in a meeting the Chair says he was misled about. Two members resigned in protest.

George Duncan will not tell you how he voted. He will not tell you why the chief was fired. Not one word to the public he is supposed to serve.

A police board seat means you serve the public. Not your own interests. Not Brenda Locke’s.

If the Police Act was broken, charges must be laid. Surrey is watching.

A police chief fired. Two board members gone. In three days.

Doug McCallum is demanding an independent police investigation. And if any laws were broken, charges must be laid. No one is above the law. Not even the Mayor Brenda Locke.

A police chief fired. Two board members gone. In three days.

And the Chair of Surrey’s own police board did not go quietly.

On his way out, he said the firing of Chief Lipinski broke the board’s own governance policies. And the Police Act. He said political tentacles had reached far too deeply into the board.

Read that again. The man who chaired the board says the law may have been broken.

When that happens, you do not hold a press conference and move on.

You call in police investigators.

Today, Doug McCallum is demanding an independent police investigation into the firing of Surrey’s police chief and the collapse of the police board.

Not the RCMP. The new board chair is a former RCMP officer who fought for years to keep the RCMP in Surrey. They cannot investigate this. Surrey deserves police investigators with no stake in the outcome.

And Doug is clear: if any laws were broken, charges must be laid.

No one is above the law. Not a board member. Not a councillor. Not the Mayor.

All of this is happening in the middle of an extortion crisis. Families getting threats. Shots fired in our neighbourhoods. And the people sworn to protect us thrown into chaos by political games.

Surrey deserves the truth. Under oath. From police investigators with no stake in the outcome.

Doug built the Surrey Police Service. He will get Surrey the answers it deserves.

Let this sink in.

An ethics commissioner found Rob Stutt in a conflict of interest on a key Surrey policing vote — and he voted on it anyway. That vote was 5 to 4. One vote.

Now? He's the Chair of the Surrey Police Board — overseeing the very transition he voted against.

How can Surrey expect an impartial police board from a man already found in conflict? 🚨

Surrey deserves accountability. Share this so people know.

Surrey residents deserve answers.

Newly appointed Surrey Police Board member Jessie Sidhu has direct family connections to people inside Brenda Locke’s inner circle.

Harry Kooner is her uncle. Pardeep Kooner, a Surrey councillor, is her cousin.

Harry Kooner is also a developer and received a reported $200,000+ taxpayer-funded job inside Brenda Locke’s Mayor’s Office, a hiring critics called cronyism.

Now Surrey residents need to ask a serious question:

Were these family and political connections used to place a Brenda Locke loyalist on the Surrey Police Board before the board voted behind closed doors to fire Police Chief Norm Lipinski?

This is about disclosure.

This is about independence.

This is about whether the Surrey Police Board was serving the public or Brenda Locke’s City Hall insiders.

Surrey deserves the truth.

If there was a valid reason to fire the Police Chief, tell the public.

If not, the board members involved should resign immediately.
