Early July is the beginning of Japanese beetle flight season!

Japanese beetles (Popillia japonica) are an invasive pest that poses a major threat to B.C. agriculture, turf, and to over 300 plant species. Adult beetles are active from June to October, with peak flight occurring during warm, sunny days (above 21°C) in July and August.

Control efforts have seen success in Vancouver, but populations in other areas of Metro Vancouver and BC still pose a challenge.

Many native insects in Surrey look similar to the Japanese Beetle - click below to see the Japanese Beetle Lookalikes Factsheet created by Invasive Species Council of BC: https://bcinvasives.ca/invasives/japanese-beetle/

Here's a photo of a similar-looking metallic insect, a Blue Shield Bug, from - taken in Green Timbers Urban Forest: https://www.inaturalist.ca/observations/376420839

Japanese beetles were first found in BC in July 2017 in downtown Vancouver. Adult Japanese beetles can feed on over 300 species of plants, including many species of agricultural and horticultural importance.
