“She Asked for a Safe Place. Hours Later, She Was Gone.” ❤️

Some stories are difficult to tell, but they deserve to be heard.

Imagine Surrey City Council candidate Margaret Mubanda shares her heartbreaking experience as a foster parent and a mother who lost her daughter to an overdose.

Margaret recalls her daughter pleading not to be sent back to an environment where she feared she would use drugs again. Despite Margaret's efforts to advocate for a safer discharge plan, her daughter was released from hospital and passed away later that night.

Her experience drives her determination to advocate for:

❤️ Safer Transitions: Better support for vulnerable young people leaving hospitals, foster care and other care settings.

🏠 Stable Housing: Safe places for youth who have no family or support system to rely on.

🤝 Stronger Community Support: Better coordination among healthcare providers, social services and community organizations.

No young person should feel they have nowhere safe to go. No family should have to face these struggles alone.

Margaret believes Surrey can do more to support vulnerable youth through partnerships, compassion and meaningful action.
