British Columbia heads to the polls this Saturday, October 24, for the 2026 Provincial Election.

For everyone who enjoys exploring B.C.'s backcountry, this election matters.

Provincial decisions directly affect public lands, resource roads, recreation sites, provincial parks and the future of backcountry access.

These decisions reach far beyond a weekend adventure. They affect our communities, local businesses, tourism opportunities and the outdoor experiences available to future generations.

Before you cast your vote, take a moment to learn where your candidates stand on outdoor recreation.

Ask the important questions:

-How will they support responsible recreation and continued access to public lands?

-How will recreation users be included in decisions about resource road closures, deactivations and backcountry access?

-How will they support the volunteer organizations and clubs that maintain trails, improve recreation sites, organize cleanups and protect our backcountry?

-How will outdoor recreation be considered in future provincial land-use planning and management decisions?

Whether you're four-wheeling, camping, hiking, hunting, fishing or simply enjoying the outdoors, these are issues worth understanding before heading to the polls.

Just under 250,000 lbs of garbage removed from Vancouver Island’s backcountry in the last twelve months.

Concrete delivered by helicopter for the Lavina Fire Lookout’s new foundation. New outhouses and recreation site improvements at places like Side Bay and Hut Lake.

Across B.C., volunteers are putting in the hours to care for the places we all love.

Behind those projects are countless hours of planning, coordination and administration, alongside ongoing advocacy to protect backcountry access, including places like Rady Creek.

70,000 lbs of garbage removed from Wh***ey Creek last year. This year, we’re looking at roughly the same amount again.

Boats, cars, travel trailers and household garbage. All dumped in our backcountry.

On November 21, we’re heading back for another major cleanup with the Four Wheel Drive Association of BC.

In the last 12 months, we’ve worked alongside our partners to haul away just under 250,000 lbs of garbage across Vancouver Island.

We use these areas. We care about them. And we’re going to keep showing up to look after them.

THE WORK YOU DON'T SEE.

When people think of the Four Wheel Drive Association of BC, they often see the big projects.

The massive backcountry cleanups. The rebuilding of fire lookouts. The installation of new infrastructure at recreation sites.

But what most people don't see is the incredible amount of work happening behind the scenes to make these projects possible.

The countless emails, phone calls, meetings, proposals, negotiations and hours of planning.

Working with government agencies, forestry companies, First Nations and other organizations to find solutions that benefit outdoor recreation.

Fighting to protect access to places like Rady Creek. Building relationships with landowners. Exploring opportunities for new recreation sites. Securing partnerships and planning projects that could take months, or even years, to become reality.

And much of this work is being done by volunteers.

People who have full-time jobs, families and responsibilities, but still dedicate their evenings, weekends and personal time to protecting the places we all love.

Not every victory comes with a ribbon cutting. Sometimes it's a meeting that opens a door, an email that changes a conversation, or a relationship that creates an opportunity where there wasn't one before.

This is what advocacy looks like behind the scenes.

And it's why membership matters.

Your membership helps support more than just the projects you see. It helps fund the administration, coordination and advocacy work necessary to keep moving forward.

Because protecting backcountry access doesn't happen overnight, and it certainly doesn't happen on its own.

No access. No adventure. 🌲

Resource roads are how many British Columbians reach their favourite trails, lakes, campsites and backcountry destinations.

But road closures, deactivations and a lack of maintenance are making some of these places harder to reach. Decisions about resource roads often focus on industrial needs, without fully considering their importance to outdoor recreation.

Maintaining access requires better planning, coordination and investment. It's an issue ORCBC and our partners are working on through our province-wide Resource Roads Access Survey.

Ask your candidates: How will you improve the management and maintenance of resource roads that provide access to outdoor recreation?

B.C.'s local elections are October 17, and the provincial election is October 24. Provincial advance voting runs October 16–21.

Public access to public land doesn't protect itself.

The fight to keep our backcountry accessible takes time, resources, and people willing to stand together.

Rady Creek has shown us what organized advocacy can accomplish. But temporary victories aren't enough. We need long-term changes to how recreational access is managed in British Columbia.

That's where the Four Wheel Drive Association of BC (4WDABC) comes in.
