Over the past year, Canada’s immigration policies have undergone drastic changes that have undermined trust in both our system and our country, leaving thousands of students and workers facing an uncertain future.

For years, Canada has promoted itself as a land of opportunity, actively encouraging international students and temporary foreign workers to invest their time, skills, money, and energy here. While not an explicit promise, they were led to believe that a clear pathway to permanent residence was likely, only to have the rules change mid-course, leaving many in limbo.

These students and workers built their lives around these expectations. They studied at our institutions, filled critical labour shortages, paid taxes, and became valued members of our communities. Now, with increased restrictions on post-graduation work permits, caps on international students, and ever-shifting PR requirements, many find themselves stranded - forced to pack up their lives and return to their home countries through no fault of their own.

This isn’t just unfair; it’s a betrayal. These individuals upheld their end of the deal, only to have the rug pulled out from under them. If Canada wants to remain a destination for top talent, we need an immigration system that is predictable, transparent, and fair, not one that punishes people who believed in our country, followed the rules, and are now being cast aside with no regard for the sacrifices they have made or the lives they have built here.

Do better, Canada.
