As our season comes to a close, we are filled with gratitude for every visitor, family, donor, and community partner who supported us this year. Thank you for helping us celebrate and preserve this remarkable place! 🇨🇦🌿

A special thank-you to our Board of Directors, volunteers, and seasonal staff for their time, dedication, and passion. Your hard work helps protect the historic Chapel Point Battery—an important part of Canada’s Second World War coastal defences—and the rich cultural history of Sydney Mines. 🕊️📖

We shared stories, laughter, learning, and so many beautiful memories this summer. Until we welcome you back again, thank you for carrying the story of Atlantic Memorial Park forward! 🌅⚓️

Our first Storytelling Event was a hugh success with approximately 30 people in attendance to listen to the reading, storytelling and music of Hugh MacDonald. An enjoyable afternoon was had by all as they listened to excerpts from Hugh two novels and listened to the stories behind the story. The afternoon was capped of by Hugh performing a few songs and offering autographs of his books. I would like to thank all that attended, especially Hugh for providing such an enjoyable time. We look forward to our next Storytelling Event scheduled for September 13th at 1:30 at the park, 19 Amber Drive, with Lesley Crewe reading and entertaining us.

🪨⚒️ Coal, Community & Wartime History

This little basket holds pieces of Sydney Mines history.

Collected along Lockman’s Beach, these pieces of coal are a reminder of the resource that helped build our community and played an important role far beyond Cape Breton.

For generations, coal mining was at the heart of Sydney Mines. During the First and Second World Wars, Cape Breton coal became especially important—fueling railways, ships and industry, while helping power the steel production that supported Canada’s wartime efforts. ⚓🇨🇦

It’s especially fitting to see this coal here at Chapel Point Battery. The military history preserved at Atlantic Memorial Park and the industrial history of Sydney Mines are deeply connected parts of the same story.

And that story began millions of years before the mines ever opened! 🌿🦖

If you’d like to learn more about the ancient forests, fossils and geology behind Cape Breton’s coal, we encourage you to visit our friends at the Cape Breton Fossil Centre, also located right here in Sydney Mines!

From ancient forests, to coal mines, to wartime industry—there is so much history beneath our feet. 💙

📅 There’s still plenty of summer left at Atlantic Memorial Park! ☀️🌿⚓

As we head into the final weeks of our 2026 summer season, we have several exciting events planned before our last regular day of operation on August 29th. Whether you’ve been meaning to visit us all summer or you’re looking for one more family outing before September arrives, this is a great time to come experience the park! 💜

⚓ August 19 – Junior Sailor Boot Camp
Our young recruits are taking over Chapel Point Battery for a full day of games, activities, learning, adventure, and fun!
🕙 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM
👧🧒 Ages 4–12
💲 $15 per Junior Sailor
Spaces are limited, so be sure to register while spots are still available!

🧺 August 28 – Picnic in the Park
Bring the family and spend the day with us at Atlantic Memorial Park! Enjoy the beautiful grounds, fresh air, history, activities, and a summer day together before the season comes to an end.
🕙 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM
👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 All ages welcome
💲 $20 per family

🎟️ August 28 – Raffle Ticket Prize Draw
We’ll also be drawing the winner of our fundraiser raffle LIVE on Facebook at 12:00 PM! If you’ve purchased a number, don’t forget to tune in to see who takes home the prize! 🎬🍿🎉

🏞️ August 29 – Final Day of Regular Park Operations
August 29th marks the end of our regular 2026 summer season. If you haven’t made it out for a guided tour yet, this is your chance! Come explore Chapel Point Battery, learn about the incredible history of the site and Sydney Harbour, and spend some time enjoying the park before our gates close for the season.

Although regular operations will conclude, guided tours can still be arranged by appointment, so our history doesn’t disappear when summer ends!

And we aren’t quite finished yet! Join us at Chapel Point Battery for a special Storytelling Event as we continue sharing the people, memories, and stories connected to our community and its history. More information, including the time and event details, will be announced soon!

Atlantic Memorial Park may be located in Sydney Mines but we came to dominate the North Sydney Dockside Days Festival round of North Sydney trivia. 😂🏆

Our very own Rachael put that vast wealth of extremely important local knowledge to work and won the trivia contest without breaking a sweat. 🧠✨

The grand prize? A massive, glorious pizza from Joe’s Place — arguably the greatest reward any historian could ask for. 🍕😂

Come visit us at Archibald’s Wharf on Commercial Street today — we’ve got artifacts, raffle tickets, goodies, local history… and now, officially, a trivia champion behind the table. 😌🏆

Our Junior Sailor Bootcamp is happening Friday, August 19th from 10:00 AM–3:00 PM at the Chapel Point Battery, 60 Amber Drive in Sydney Mines!
