💜 ICYMI: EverWind NS has surpassed $1.1 MILLION in support of Caleb's Courage!

This year, the team at EverWind raised a record-breaking $262,174.33 through the Fairways to Success Charity Golf Classic, bringing their cumulative support of Caleb’s Courage to an incredible $1,112,658.

Reaching this milestone reflects the generosity, dedication, and community support behind Fairways to Success year after year.

We are deeply saddened by the passing of John Malcom, whose leadership, vision, and commitment to care closer to home had a lasting impact on health care in Cape Breton – Unama’ki.

John understood that strong health care is built not only through services and facilities, but through people, partnerships, compassion, and a genuine commitment to community. His influence can still be seen in so many areas of care across the region, and his legacy will continue to be felt for years to come.

On behalf of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation, we extend our heartfelt condolences to John’s family, friends, former colleagues, and all those who knew and worked alongside him. He will be dearly missed.

Today, we recognize and honour the legacy of John Malcom, retired CEO of the former Cape Breton District Health Authority (CBDHA) who passed away on Oct. 6, 2026.

John’s distinguished career in healthcare administration took him to Ottawa, Halifax, and Saskatoon before he found “home” in Cape Breton. Throughout his career John built many meaningful relationships across the province and had a significant impact on our healthcare system. He was dedicated to improving access to care closer to home and helped add or expand services like cancer care, renal dialysis, diagnostic imaging, and palliative care in Cape Breton.

He also championed population health initiatives, partnerships that supported the social determinants of health, and care provided in communities, not just hospitals. As a leader, John encouraged and nurtured collaborative teams. He believed people should be at the heart of every decision and appreciated the hard work and dedication of our staff, physicians, volunteers, and learners. In his role, he saw the many examples of kindness and compassion that happen each day in our facilities and he was the first one to applaud the good work and achievements of our teams.

Even in retirement, John remained an advocate of healthcare in Cape Breton and the communities he proudly called home. We extend our heartfelt condolences to John’s family, friends, former colleagues, and everyone whose lives were touched by his leadership and kindness.

His legacy and contributions will continue to be felt throughout our healthcare system for generations to come.

This year, you can help bring two new portable X-ray units to the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. For patients who are too sick, injured, or unstable to be transported to Diagnostic Imaging, portable X-ray units allow health care teams to bring lifesaving imaging directly to the bedside.

These new units will help support faster diagnoses, quicker treatment decisions, safer care, and improved comfort for patients right here in Cape Breton – Unama’ki and across Nova Scotia Health’s Eastern Zone.
