🐾 K9 Search Dog Visit at CBSAR 🐾

Tonight we had the pleasure of welcoming Maria and her K9 partner, Cabella, to our CBSAR building for a truly engaging visit.

Maria is based in Alberta and is affiliated with the Search and Rescue Dog Association of Canada (SARDAC). She shared insights into Cabella’s training, certification work, and their experiences supporting search and rescue operations across Canada and the United States, including hurricane response, building searches, and other deployments.

Cabella is a 7-year-old air-scent trained search dog, specializing in locating live human scent. We learned how she works independently in the field, using wind-borne scent to locate missing persons. Once she finds a subject, she is trained to bark to indicate her find.

Maria also gave a demonstration of Cabella’s training and abilities, including a live search exercise where Cabella successfully located “lost” subjects. It was incredible to see her drive, focus, and precision in action.

We are very grateful to Maria and Cabella for taking the time to visit, share their work, and give our members a hands-on look at the world of K9 search and rescue.

What a day!! 🌲☀️

Yesterday marked our 5th Annual ATV Rally and what a ride it was.

After months of planning, organizing, coordinating routes, gathering sponsors, selling tickets, preparing guides, and countless volunteer hours behind the scenes, seeing approximately 65 riders hit the trails made every bit of work worth it 🧡

From engines firing up in the morning sunshine to the final machines rolling in safely at the end of the day, this event reminded us exactly what community looks like. Riders, volunteers, guides, supporters, sponsors, and searchers all came together to make it happen.

A huge thank you to everyone who registered, volunteered, donated, guided intersections, shared our posts, bought tickets, or supported us along the way. Events like this don’t happen without community, and every rider and supporter helps us continue serving our communities when people need us most.

The smiles, laughter, dusty machines, breath taking views and stories shared throughout the day made this one for the books. 🧡

Trivia night is underway! 🧠🍻

A few of our members are out tonight supporting Breton Brewing’s June Trivia Nights, where proceeds this month are helping support Cape Breton Search & Rescue.

We’re incredibly grateful for the support from Breton Brewing and everyone who came out tonight to test their knowledge, have some laughs, and support local volunteers ❤️

Today is a day we are incredibly proud and humbled to share.

We are honoured to announce that today, Saturday, May 30, 2026, has officially been proclaimed Cape Breton Search and Rescue Day in the Cape Breton Regional Municipality.

For more than 50 years, our members have answered the call, day or night, rain or shine, leaving behind family dinners, warm beds, workdays, and special moments to help those in need. This recognition belongs not only to our current members, but to every volunteer, past and present, who has dedicated countless hours to training, responding, fundraising, and serving our communities.

We want to extend our sincere thanks to Mayor Cecil Clarke and CBRM for this proclamation and recognition of volunteer search and rescue in our region.

Most importantly, thank you to our communities for your continued support. Whether through donations, kind words, fundraising support, or simply cheering us on from the sidelines, you are part of what keeps us going.
