Traffic Advisory: Cape Breton Fiddlers Marathon - October 18, 2026

Motorists are advised to use caution on Sunday, October 18, between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. during the Cape Breton Fiddlers Marathon, as runners will travel along the Esplanade, Kings Road, Keltic Drive and Westmount Road.

The Esplanade will be closed from Desbarres Street to Townsend Street. Streets connecting Charlotte Street to the Esplanade will also be blocked. The curb lane on Kings Road will be closed to traffic between Townsend Street and Lewis Drive.

Traffic heading toward the Fiddle for cruise ship activities will be escorted through the affected area.

Please watch for runners and follow directions from traffic personnel. Good luck to all runners!

Working smoke alarms help protect your home and give you an early warning in the event of a fire.

Eligible homeowners can apply for free smoke alarm installation through CBRM’s Smoke Alarm Installation Program.

Applications are open until October 31, or while supplies last. Local fire departments will install smoke alarms free of charge for eligible applicants.

Event Access & Shuttle Operations

Please be advised that off-site parking for upcoming venue events is available at Open Hearth Park.

To accommodate attendees and minimize traffic congestion, Transit Cape Breton will operate a continuous shuttle service between Open Hearth Park and the venue. Shuttle operations will commence at 4:30 PM.

Drivers are encouraged to park at Open Hearth Park and utilize this complimentary service to ensure safe and efficient travel to the event venue.

Applications for the Low-Income Property Tax Exemption are open until December 31, 2026.

Eligible property owners may qualify for a maximum yearly tax reduction of $300.00, subject to the following conditions:

1. Applicant is a permanent resident of CBRM.
2. Applicant has legal title to the property.
3. The property is the applicant's primary residence and is assessed in his/her name.
4. Total household income is less than $41,664.

Application forms are also available at the Citizen Service Centre at City Hall, or can be requested by mail or email by calling 311.

Notice: Charlotte Street - September 26, 2026

Charlotte Street will be closed from Dorchester Street to Townsend Street, including the corresponding side streets, beginning at approximately 2 p.m. on Saturday, September 26, and remaining closed until approximately 1 a.m. on Sunday, September 27.

The closure is in place for Lumière Cape Breton Festival, taking place from 7 p.m. to midnight on Saturday, September 26.

Additional parking and shuttle service to and from Open Hearth Park, available for the Cape Breton Pro Rodeo, will also be available to Lumière attendees.

Please be advised that there will be a road closure in Sydney on September 23, 2026. They will be removing trees at 538 Charlotte street, the road will be closed at Townsend and Byng. Emergency vehicles allowed through. It will closed until 5:PM.
