Loaves and Fishes Sydney

Loaves and Fishes Sydney Loaves and Fishes is a non-profit organization based in Sydney, NS that provides meals for those in need every day of the year.

In 1981, a group of concerned citizens came together to discuss the growing problems of people going hungry with no means to help themselves. In December 1981, Loaves and Fishes Community Kitchen, a non-profit restaurant, opened it's doors for the first time, serving a noon-time meal. It started as a pilot project to only last a few months but the need became apparent and is still in operation today,

At present the kitchen is serving 50,000 plus meals annually.

On Saturday June 20, the Staff and Board of Directors of Loaves and Fishes had the privilege of hosting family and friends of our late former board member and Founding Father, Mr Wayne Yorke. Attending were past and current board members, along with some volunteers, who shared memories with the family. Rev. Norman MacPhee delivered an address recalling the origins of Loaves and Fishes and highlighting Mr. Yorke’s vital role in its founding. Mr. Yorke’s son, Mateo, also spoke about how significantly Loaves and Fishes influenced his life growing up in the Yorke family, as it was also an important part of his sister Natasha’s and his mother Carolee’s lives.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined us. Loaves and Fishes presented the family with a portrait of Mr. Yorke, inscribed with “ I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink” (Matthew 25:35-40), reflecting his lifelong dedication to community service. He will always be remembered for his commitment, leadership, and generous spirit toward the organization and those in need. His example inspires us to continue his mission and uphold the values of Loaves and Fishes.

Community Spotlight: Loaves and Fishes Sydney

This week, our Community Spotlight shines on Loaves and Fishes Sydney, an incredible non-profit that has been a haven for those needing a helping hand since 1981.

They are so much more than a community kitchen; they are a vital hub that operates every day of the year, offering warm, nutritious meals, foodstuffs to go, and even clothing. Their dedicated volunteers and staff ensure that nobody leaves hungry.

The Impact:
They dish up more than 44,000 meals every year for our neighbours in the CBRM.
They provide a space of dignity and respect at their facility on Charlotte Street.
The work of Loaves and Fishes is an essential part of the community care we envision at the Haven for All Initiative. Their tireless efforts to address food security and poverty are an inspiration to us all.

They rely almost entirely on volunteers and monetary/food donations to keep their doors open. Please join us in sharing your support for this essential organization.
