Jas Payne - Citizen, Volunteer, Committed Sylvan Laker Former Town Councillor. High School Educator. Onward and Upward.

I am looking for a Math Tutor that can do Math 30-2 and Math 30-1. I usually have a few that can accommodate the lower Maths, but this requires a more accomplished mathematician. Reach out if you know or are one.

After 13 years of serving the people of Sylvan Lake, I have made the difficult decision to resign my position as Town Councillor, effective immediately.

This has not been an easy decision, nor one I have made quickly. Public service has been an enormous part of my life, and the trust the people of Sylvan Lake have placed in me over the years is something I will always carry with tremendous gratitude.

If you have ever thought about serving your community, consider putting your name forward. If running isn’t for you, find a candidate you believe in. Volunteer. Ask questions. Attend forums. Have conversations with your neighbours. And, most importantly, vote.

Local government matters, and strong communities require good people who are willing to step forward and participate. Rather than focusing your energy on my departure, I encourage you to put that energy into deciding who should occupy this seat next and what you want the future of Sylvan Lake to look like.

There will be an opportunity in the coming days for me to say more about this decision, my 13 years of service, and a community that has meant so much to me.

For today, I simply want to say thank you. Thank you for your trust, your conversations, your disagreements, your encouragement, and most of all, for giving me the extraordinary privilege of representing you.

Sylvan Lake is my home. Leaving Council does not change that, nor does it change how deeply I care about this community and its future.

It has truly been an honour to serve you.

When an individual is elected to public office, they assume a responsibility that extends far beyond those who cast a ballot in their favour. They become a representative of the entire community, every resident, every family, every voice. Good governance requires keeping this broader duty at the forefront of every decision.

Moreover, effective leadership is never achieved in isolation. No matter how strong one’s intentions may be, meaningful progress is only possible when others are willing to walk alongside you. For example, even the most well-designed policy or initiative will falter without collaboration: a brilliantly envisioned idea succeeds not because one person envisioned it, but because council members commit themselves to working together. It is in that shared effort, not individual ambition, where real change takes root.

Together we achieve.
