Living on your own for the first time?

Whether you're staying on or off campus, here’s what you need to know:

🔥Make sure working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are installed outside of all sleeping areas and on every storey - (test them!)

🔥Two ways to escape any room in case of a fire (plan and practice it!)

🔥 Remember to change the batteries on the alarms every year (or ask your landlord!)

With the summer season in full swing, Campfires and BBQs are everywhere. One unattended flame can spread fast in dry conditions.
Don’t leave it till it’s out:
✔ Pour water on it
✔ Stir it up to ensure no hidden embers
✔ Make sure it’s completely cool

Because the only thing that should be spreading this summer is good vibes.

Lithium-ion batteries often show warning signs before they fail. Look for swelling, leaks, strange odours, discolouration, or unusual sounds.

If you notice any of these, stop using the battery right away and move it away from anything flammable.

Mrs. O’Leary’s Cow may have gotten a bad rap, but the folktale reminds us that fire safety is an important part of farm life. People, animals, and property are in danger when fire breaks out on the farm. Follow this checklist to reduce the risk of fire in your barn today!

🚒 Fire & Emergency Services | Reducing the Risk of Bale Fires

Bale fires can develop days or even weeks after baling as moisture trapped inside the bale creates heat. Whether you're storing hay or straw, early detection is the key to preventing a devastating barn or storage fire.

Watch for the warning signs:

🌡️ Bale temperatures above 65°C indicate dangerous heating.

📞 Temperatures above 80°C? Call 9-1-1 immediately.

👃 A sweet, caramel-like or musty odour can indicate internal heating.

💨 Steam or hot spots within the stack are warning signs that should never be ignored.

Help prevent bale fires:

✅ Bale crops at the recommended moisture content.

🌡️ Monitor bale temperatures regularly using a hay temperature probe, especially during the first several weeks after storage.

🏠 Store bales in a well-ventilated area and away from ignition sources.

🚫 Do not move or separate overheated bales. Introducing oxygen can cause rapid fire development.

🚫 Despite common myths, adding salt does not prevent spontaneous combustion.

A few minutes of monitoring today can help protect your barn, livestock, equipment, feed, and livelihood.

Stay safe and have a successful harvest season!
