The Gitselasu Stewardship Society and the staff of Kitselas Canyon mourn the passing of our Elder, friend, and Board member, Sm’oogyet We’e Nis-Hiwas, Ken McDames, Sr., Gispudwada.
We will remember Ken for his generosity, his gift for storytelling, his wisdom, and his unmistakable sense of humour. His presence had a way of bringing people together, and his laughter could make even the most serious moment a little lighter.
Ken gave generously to the Kitselas community in many ways throughout his life. As a Director on our Board, he shared his knowledge, guidance, and wisdom as we worked to protect and celebrate Kitselas cultural heritage. He was steadfast in his commitment. Neither inclement weather nor health setbacks could keep him away from meetings, events, or the work he cared about.
On his most recent visit to Kitselas Canyon, Ken welcomed a team of archaeologists to Laxyuubm Gitselasu (Kitselas Territory) as they began work on an ancestral village site. He spoke with the solemnity and grace that the occasion deserved, but, true to Ken’s nature, he couldn’t resist a few jokes to put everyone at ease. (Including a good one about the port-a-potty!)
We are grateful that Ken’s voice, humour, wisdom, and generosity were part of that day, and of the work we do at Kitselas Canyon.
His absence will be deeply felt. His stories will be remembered, his laughter will be missed, and his contributions to Kitselas will endure. We extend our condolences to Ken’s family and large circle of close friends. Hagwil yaan (walk softly).
