๐ŸŒฟ Thank you to those who attended the Invasive Plant Presentation last Thursday. Tina was very informative and knowledgeable in this topic. Participants learned that many of these invasive plants are still being sold at green houses, and it is surprising which beautiful plants are actually invasive!

Daniel, from Lake Huron North was in attendance and was very knowledgeable and provided additional information to contribute to discussions.

Attached are the slides from the presentation for anyone interested in learning more about invasive species and their impact on our community and natural spaces.

If you would like to be part of a community group to help tackle invasive plants, or if you would like more information and would like to be added to our emails, please reach out to [email protected].

Together, we can help protect and preserve Thessalonโ€™s natural beauty for future generations. ๐Ÿ’š

๐ŸŒฟ Whatโ€™s Growing in Thessalonโ€ฆ Isnโ€™t Always Welcome! ๐ŸŒฟ

Did you know some of the plants you see around Thessalon are actually invasive species? These plants may look harmlessโ€”or even beautifulโ€”but they spread aggressively, crowd out native plants, and disrupt our local ecosystems.

๐Ÿšซ Some Common Invasive Plants in Our Area Include:
* Purple Loosestrife โ€“ A pretty purple plant that takes over wetlands and pushes out native species.
* Creeping Bellflower โ€“ A persistent garden escapee that spreads rapidly through roots and seeds, making it very hard to control.
* Periwinkle โ€“ Often used as groundcover, but it can spread into natural areas and outcompete native plants.
* Japanese Knotweed โ€“ Extremely aggressive, can damage foundations and is very difficult to remove.

๐ŸŒฑ Why It Matters
Invasive plants reduce biodiversity, impact wildlife habitats, and can even affect our shorelines and water quality.

๐Ÿงค What You Can Do
โœ” Learn to identify invasive species
โœ” Remove them safely - DO NOT compost, or bring to the landfill
โœ” Plant native species instead
โœ” Report large infestations

As you tidy up your yard and garden this spring, keep in mind that proper disposal of yard waste is important. Many invasive plants can regrow from small fragments or seeds, meaning improper disposal can spread them further.

Some tips:
โœ”๏ธ Bag and dispose of invasive plant material
โœ”๏ธ Avoid composting invasive plants
โœ”๏ธ Clean soil, seeds, and plant debris from tools, boots, and equipment
โœ”๏ธ Avoid dumping yard waste in natural areas
โœ”๏ธ Check local guidelines for proper disposal options in your community
