Wildfire Update – Tuesday, August 26

The Manitoba Wildfire Service changed the status of Fire NO061 near Thompson to Under Control on August 25. It was classified as Being Held from August 23-24. Before that, it was classified as Out of Control from the day it started – July 4 – until August 22.

Under Control does not mean that a fire is out. It is used to describe a fire that has received enough suppression activities to prevent any further spread of the fire.

The Wildfire Service said one hot spot was found in Fire NO061 on Monday and that ground crews were working on it. There was no active smoke within the fire perimeter. Firefighters will continue to monitor the fire over the coming days, with temperatures expected to reach 27 degrees Celsius on Thursday and 30 degrees on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

After discussions with the Manitoba Wildfire Service and Manitoba Emergency Management Organization, the City of Thompson is cancelling & withdrawing the July 11 Evacuation Pre-Alert Notice as of Friday, August 15.

This decision is based on progress controlling nearby wildfires, the projected weather conditions over the next two weeks, and the multiple layers of protection for the community that have been established by construction of fire breaks and the purchase of value protection sprinklers.

The chances of a mandatory evacuation becoming necessary are now low.

However, the fire season is not over and wildfires are still starting and burning in the North. Thompson residents should stay aware of the wildfire situation.

The City of Thompson thanks residents for their cooperation with fire and off-road vehicle bans this summer and for registering to support evacuation preplanning.

Wildfire Update – Thursday, August 14

All of the fires around Thompson received substantial rain yesterday and today, with more rain expected tomorrow and over the weekend.

Fire NO061 is exhibiting low fire behaviour. The much-needed rain, high humidity and low temperatures are controlling fire behaviour and assisting in fire suppression efforts by crews on the ground. The fire is still listed as “Out of Control” due to its proximity to the City of Thompson, but a lot of progress is being made on the fire with the sustained work of ground and aerial crews combined with the favourable weather.

Manitoba Wildfire Service has changed the status of Fire NO050 from “Out of Control” to “Being Held.” Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation and the Incorporated Community of Nelson House have begun returning to community after their evacuation. Repatriation will take place over the next few days.

Rain is expected to continue through part of the day on Friday, and it is projected to rain again on Sunday. Temperatures will remain cool throughout the weekend, with favourable wind conditions.

The City of Thompson is holding discussions with the Manitoba Wildfire Service and Manitoba Emergency Management Organization on updated risk assessments for the community based on the current status of the fires.

Wildfire Update - Aug 12, 2025

Six new fires started in the north yesterday.

Fire NO061 had reduced fire activity in the eastern section. EFF crews remain camped out by the fire and are working on hotspots. In the Moak Lake area of the fire, the rain has reduced fire activity. The south-central region of the fire, behaviour is reduced due to rain as well. Crews continue to action hotspots identified.

Fire NO050 received very light rain around Mile 20. Crews are working on extinguishing hot spots along the fire guard on the west side. Fire activity has been reduced due to high relative humidity and light winds. Work is progressing well on the western flank, with crews moping up hotspots.

Crews from Quebec arrive in Thompson yesterday. 20 have travelled to Lynn Lake and 20 are staying in the Thompson area.

Thompson and the region received 3-10mm of rain. Temperature will be below seasonal, with winds North-West at 10-15km/hr. A low pressure system is expected to arrive on Thursday and will bring additional precipitation and high relative humidity.
