Recovery doesn’t look one way.

There is no single timeline, no single path, and no one definition of progress that fits everyone.

Recovery is personal. Each person brings their own experiences, needs, strengths and goals — and the support that is meaningful to them may look different, too.

This National Recovery Awareness Month, we’re recognizing progress in all the ways it can happen and the importance of meeting people with listening, choice, connection and dignity.

Every recovery journey deserves respect.

Today, on International Overdose Awareness Day, we remember lives lost to overdose and acknowledge all those impacted.

We also recognize the importance of action: reducing stigma, strengthening support, and making space for care rooted in dignity and compassion.

As International Overdose Awareness Day approaches, we are taking time to reflect, remember, and recognize the importance of compassionate support.

Overdose is not just a public issue — it is personal. It affects people, families, and communities in lasting ways.

We believe every person deserves to be met with dignity, empathy, and care.

On August 31, we join in remembering those lost and in continuing conversations that help reduce stigma and strengthen support.

You may hear us use the term "person-centred" a lot — but what does it actually mean?

For us, it starts with recognizing that each person knows their own life best.

It means listening before assuming. Understanding that everyone brings their own experiences, strengths, challenges and goals. Respecting each person’s choices, rights and dignity.

Most importantly, it means working with people — not deciding what their journey should look like for them.

Because there is no single “right” path forward.

Your pace. Your journey. Your goals.

Being person-centred and trauma-informed shapes how we work at Marathon.

That’s why team members across our organization—regardless of their role—take part in training that helps us build the confidence, awareness and skills to respond thoughtfully when challenging situations arise.

These skills aren’t only valuable on the front line. They help us support one another, create safer and more compassionate spaces, and ensure the people we serve are met with dignity and respect.

When we learn together, everyone benefits.

🤝 What Makes a Strong Community?

A strong community isn't one where everyone needs the same things.

It's one where people can access the right support, at the right time, in the right way.

Sometimes that's a safe place to call home.

Sometimes it's mental health or addiction support.

Sometimes it's help developing skills, finding meaningful opportunities, building relationships, or becoming more connected to the community.

And very often, it takes more than one organization working together to make that happen.

At Marathon Community Services, we believe strong communities are built when we recognize people's strengths, remove barriers, create opportunities, and work together.

Because everyone deserves the opportunity to build the life that's right for them.

💙 Did You Know?

Did you know that homelessness is rarely caused by just one thing?

People can lose housing because of rising costs, job loss, mental illness, family breakdown, trauma, health challenges, lack of affordable housing, or a combination of factors.

For many people, the path back to stability takes more than finding a place to live. It can also mean access to healthcare, mental health and addiction supports, outreach, income support, and strong community connections.

At Marathon Community Services, we believe the best outcomes happen when people are met with dignity, practical support, and opportunities to move forward at their own pace.

Homelessness is complex. The response has to be coordinated, compassionate, and person-centred.

💙 Your Pace. Your Journey. Your Goals.

In Their Words 💬

Sometimes the most meaningful measure of a program isn’t found in numbers. It’s found in the experiences of the people we support.

For Cody, being part of the Marathon-Options Niagara Program has meant making friends, discovering volunteer opportunities, finding a place to share his passion for food, and learning about new possibilities in his community.

These are the moments that matter to us.

At Marathon, our role isn’t to define someone else’s journey. It’s to create opportunities, build connections and support people as they discover what’s possible — at their pace, on their journey, toward their goals.

Thank you, Cody, for sharing your experience with us.
