With its unique resources, the Niagara Peninsula is one of the most complex watersheds in the Province. It includes lands drained by the Niagara River, Twenty Mile Creek, the Welland River, the Welland Canal, Lake Erie and Lake Ontario.Located between two Great Lakes and transversed by the Niagara Escarpment, the Niagara Peninsula has truly unique climatic and biotic zones that are unlike anywhere else in North America. Our programs focus on the watershed management activities that help keep people and their property safe from flooding and erosion.

Wetlands, forests, floodplains and shorelines do more than create natural beauty — they function as critical infrastructure within the watershed.

Wetlands store and slow floodwater. Forests filter water and stabilize landscapes. Floodplains give rivers room to expand, while healthy shorelines help protect communities and improve water quality.

Together, these natural systems support biodiversity, reduce flood risk, and help build resilience across the Niagara Peninsula watershed.

For decades, NPCA has worked with communities and partners to protect and restore these landscapes. As we mark 80 years of conservation history, the role of conservation authorities in supporting healthy, resilient communities remains as important as ever. 💧

Another fantastic conservation area season has come and gone! It feels like one day it was summer and in the blink of an eye, the colours have started changing and the temperatures start to drop. ✨

A friendly reminder that NPCA conservation areas remain open daily from sunrise to sunset for passive recreation, such as hiking and birdwatching. A complete list of parks can be found at https://buff.ly/UQEUfKR.

While the camping season at Chippawa Creek and Long Beach has ended, and seasonal activities and amenities at Binbrook have concluded, the conservation areas remain open for passive day-use activities, like dog walking and nature photography. Washroom facilities are closed for the season.

Ball’s Falls is also open for passive recreation, and washroom facilities are only available when the Centre for Conservation is open.

At Binbrook and Ball’s Falls conservation areas an off-season rate of $9/vehicle is in effect beginning November 1.

Always use caution and prepare appropriately for the weather and trail conditions when exploring nature.

🌳 September was a great month for TD Tree Days!

Throughout the month, volunteers joined NPCA, municipalities, and community partners for TD Tree Days plantings at Binbrook Conservation Area in Hamilton, Niagara Stone Road in Niagara-on-the-Lake, and McAdam Skate Park in Thorold.

Together, volunteers helped plant 1800 trees, supporting the restoration of natural spaces and helping grow a greener, more resilient watershed. 🌱

Thank you to everyone who rolled up their sleeves and joined us, TD Friends of the Environment, our participating municipalities, and community partners for helping make these planting days possible.

And we’re not done yet! TD Tree Days continue in October, with more opportunities to get involved and make an impact.

The library isn’t just for reading anymore! 📚 Visit your local library to borrow a Library NaturePlus Pass for one week.

You can sign out a pass at the library (exactly like a book) and spend the day at Ball's Falls, Binbrook, Long Beach, or Chippawa Creek conservation areas!

Your local library might even have nature backpacks complete with binoculars and guidebooks! Step into nature and learn more about the Carolinian forest and its floral and fauna.
