A big THANK YOU to Alanna and Mackenzie for all their hard work with NPCA this summer!

Through a collaborative partnership with the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters’ Hit Squad Program and the Invasive Species Centre, with support from Canada Summer Jobs, Alanna and Mackenzie spent the summer helping NPCA monitor and manage invasive species across our watershed.

Together they:
🗺️Mapped invasive Phragmites
🔬Monitored NPCA Conservation Areas for Spotted Lanternfly and Oak Wilt — luckily, neither were found!
🌲 Assessed and monitored hundreds of Eastern Hemlock trees as part of NPCA’s ongoing management of Hemlock Woolly Adelgid
⚙️Tested new technology and tools for mapping invasive species across the Niagara Peninsula watershed
💬Spoke with Conservation Area visitors about invasive species and the importance of preventing their spread

And their work wasn’t limited to invasive species! They even helped a fence-climbing snapping turtle safely get back home! 🐢

Thank you, Alanna and Mackenzie, for an amazing summer and for helping protect the lands and waters of the Niagara Peninsula watershed. Great work! 💚

For generations, Rockway, Beamer Memorial, Wainfleet Wetlands, and Long Beach have connected people to nature, local history, and the landscapes that define the Niagara Peninsula watershed. 🌿

From waterfalls and escarpment views to wetlands and the Lake Erie shoreline, each conservation area protects a distinct part of our region’s natural history.

With support from communities, municipalities, and partners, NPCA has protected and cared for these places across the decades. Today, they remain spaces to explore, learn, and connect with nature, helping carry their legacy forward for generations to come. 🏞️

Flood Outlook Statement

The Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority (NPCA) is advising local municipalities, emergency services, and the public of the potential for flooding within its jurisdiction. This includes the Niagara Peninsula, the southeastern portion of the City of Hamilton, and the eastern portion of Haldimand County.

A slow-moving weather system is expected to bring thunderstorms and significant rainfall from Saturday, August 22, through Monday, August 24. Total rainfall amounts of 40 to 60 mm are possible, with locally higher amounts where thunderstorms develop. Thunderstorms may produce an additional 15 to 25 mm in affected areas.

Major flooding along larger watercourses is not currently anticipated. However, intense rainfall may cause flash flooding along small and urbanized watercourses, rapid increases in water levels, and localized flooding in low-lying or poorly drained areas. Current water levels remain well below critical elevations.

Residents are strongly advised to stay away from creeks, rivers, and other waterbodies. Water levels may rise quickly, and banks may become slippery and unstable.
Children and pets should be kept away from waterways.
Property owners are encouraged to clear debris from culverts, catch basins, and ditches.
Municipal and regional staff are advised to inspect stormwater infrastructure and monitor known flood-prone areas.

Building a healthier, more resilient watershed takes long-term stewardship, restoration, and monitoring.

In 2025, this work included:
• 125.8 hectares of new conservation land
• 45,438 trees and 4,736 shrubs planted
• 20.71 hectares restored
• 33 hydrometric stations monitored

Together, these actions help enhance natural spaces, wildlife habitat, and strengthen the watershed’s ability to adapt to change.

This summer and fall, we’ll be visiting communities along the Lake Ontario shoreline at popular locations and community events and we want to hear from you!

In 2025, NPCA conservation areas, education programs, library partnerships, and events helped more people get outside, learn, and experience the watershed firsthand.

Highlights include:
• 632,041 conservation area visitors
• 15,450 students engaged in outdoor education programs and camps
• 1091 NaturePlus members—borrowed 1,437 times through local libraries
• 30,000 attendees at signature events
