Celebrating Philippine Independence Day

Today, the City of Thorold proudly raised the National Flag of the Philippines at City Hall in celebration of Philippine Independence Day.

The Philippines commemorates its 128th Independence Day, marking the anniversary of the 1898 proclamation of Philippine independence from Spanish rule.

Mayor Ugulini, along with City and Regional Councillors, joined representatives from the Filipino-Canadian Association of Niagara (FCAN) to celebrate the rich heritage, culture, and traditions of the Filipino community. The ceremony also recognized the many contributions Filipino Canadians have made to the City of Thorold, the Niagara Region, and communities across Canada.

Plum Pox Virus Survey by Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA)

CFIA Inspectors will be going door-to-door to sample PPV-susceptible plant species and/or verify compliance with the current propagation ban, which prohibits anyone in the quarantine area from producing trees and plants that are susceptible to the virus.

The in-person survey will be conducted within the cities of Stoney Creek, Lincoln, Grimsby, Beamsville, Vineland, Jordan, St. Catharines, Thorold, Niagara Falls and Niagara-on-the-Lake and will conclude by the Fall of 2026. Residents in these cities may see CFIA inspectors on their property. CFIA staff conducting survey work in residential areas will have CFIA identification badges and will wear an orange safety vest so that they are easily identifiable.

If members of the public have any questions specific to PPV and the survey, they can reach the CFA office at (905) 938 5060
