Nishnawbe Aski Police Service officer Cst. Sebastian Vermeire has brought a piece of Keewaywin First Nation to the very top of Mt. Kilimanjaro! 🏔️

Before leaving for his trip, Cst. Vermeire visited classrooms in Keewaywin First Nation to speak with students about the importance of setting goals and working hard to achieve them. He shared inspiring words about overcoming life's challenges. As part of his motivational lesson, students, along with the Keewaywin First Nation Chief and Council, signed a special flag gifted to him. The flag was hand-sewn by a local Elder, making the journey deeply meaningful.

“The flag travelled with me to Tanzania, where I visited a school within a Maasai community and donated school supplies to the children there,” said Cst. Vermeire. “One of the Maasai leaders toured me around the area and introduced me to the students. I spoke to them about the First Nations communities of Canada and the children from Keewaywin who signed the flag.”

Many of the children had never used a cellphone or seen a world map before. This made explaining Canada's location a unique challenge.

“They were especially fascinated by how we live and survive during the cold Canadian winters,” he added.

The trek to the summit took five days to climb and two days to descend. We are thrilled to have Cst. Vermeire back and proud of how he found such a unique way to inspire and engage youth both at home and abroad.
