The 12th annual respect. Award recipients were announced during Diversity Thunder Bay’s Annual event today, marking the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

Mary Kozorys received the individual respect. award for her volunteer and professional accomplishments with the Elizabeth Fry Society of Northwestern Ontario where she demonstrates a commitment to honouring people where they are at and recognizing the value in human dignity overall.

The Walleye, Thunder Bay’s art and cultural alternative magazine, won the respect. award for an organization for its work providing thoughtful social and environmental commentary that helps to promote pride of place and acceptance in our community.

We are now 24 hours away from the kickoff of our first Opening Ceremony event and the start of the 2024 Ontario Winter Games presented by

Athletes are starting to arrive in the city and the organizing committee and our dedicated volunteers are working right up to the last minute to ensure that every detail is taken care of and that these Games are an incredible experience for everyone involved.

Come out and celebrate these young athletes, and let’s show these visitors our incredible northern hospitality.

Opening Ceremonies is Friday at Fort William Historical Park and competition runs all weekend at venues across the city.

Everything is free to attend, and everyone is welcome.

The Thunder Bay Public Library is hosting community sessions to garner insight from Indigenous and racialized folks on their perspectives and experiences with Physical space and what physical barriers prevent members of these communities from entering or feeling welcome in our spaces.
30 spots are available and the group will be led by two local Indigenous facilitators: Leanna and Jean Marshall.

Registration required. Food and an honorarium will be provided for participants!
