Something happened today that I couldn’t help but feel was a little more than a coincidence.
As we’ve been settling into our new office, I’ve been finding little ways to bring some of my Dad with me and reminders to carry the same intentions he had in business: to work hard, do things the right way, and always operate with integrity.
I decided to dedicate a wall beside my office to him, with a few things that remind me of him. One of those things is his old Klein tool belt suspenders, along with a picture of us working on his roof when I was about six years old. He’s wearing those exact suspenders in the picture.
As I was hanging them up, I stopped for a minute and wondered if it was a little odd to have all of these personal things in the office.
Then I thought, Dad did start SFA after all. He is the founder of this company, so maybe it isn’t so strange to have a little piece of him here.
And then I thought about when he actually started it and I had to check the Articles of Incorporation just to make sure.
Sure enough - August 13, 2013. Today, 13 years ago.
I started working for my Dad in 2016 as a technician helper, and in 2024, I purchased SFA from him. I never imagined when I first started working for him that I would one day own the company he started.
With Dad’s funeral approaching next week, I couldn’t help but feel like maybe this was his way of reminding me that he’s still a part of this place.
He may have started SFA, but he left me with so much more than a business. He left me with an example of how I want to run it.
I’m proud to carry it forward, and even prouder to carry a little bit of him with it.
