Porcupine Health Unit The Porcupine Health Unit and the Timiskaming Health Unit have merged! This page will no longer be active as of January 12, 2026.

Please follow .spne for the same trusted information! Health is more than just not being sick. And it’s more than just doctors and hospitals. As a community, we can all do things to improve our own health and the health of those around us. The Porcupine Health Unit has been helping people from Timmins to Moosonee and from Hearst to Matheson do that for over 75 years. We help through a variety

of relevant and accessible programs and services. Over 120 staff in nine different offices deliver these programs and services. They include dental hygienists, speech-language pathologists, geneticists, public health dietitians, inspectors, public health nurses, health promoters and outreach workers. Whether we do it through our own work or working with our many partners throughout the area, we’re here to help. The Porcupine Health Unit is a public health unit as defined by the Health Protection and Promotion Act. We serve an area covering the Cochrane District and the Town of Hornepayne in Ontario, Canada. Our head office is located in Timmins, Ontario. There are eight branch offices located throughout the district of Cochrane and in Hornepayne in the district of Algoma.

Communication is key for a safe and fun off-roading adventure. Make sure to use proper hand signals before stopping, slowing down or turning. Give signals early so other rides can see and react in time.

Don’t forget to pay attention to trail signs! They guide you through terrain changes, hazards and trail etiquette. Keep in mind, trail signs aren’t official traffic signs, and they may vary in size/shape and colour.

Each week, we calculate the percentage of visits related to respiratory illnesses and compare it to past trends. Based on this, we classify activity as low, moderate, or high to show how illnesses affect the community.

Since people visit emergency departments mostly for moderate or severe symptoms, this also gives clues about illness severity. By tracking these trends, we help keep our community informed and prepared.

Tracking respiratory illnesses like colds, flu, and other viruses helps protect the health of people in our communities. While we can't measure exactly how much virus is circulating, emergency department visits give us a good sense of their impact.

Reduce your risk and protect others:
• Wash your hands and high-touch objects and surfaces.
• Wear a mask.
• Spend time outdoors or in well-ventilated indoor spaces.
• Stay home if you're sick.
• Get vaccinated.

Stay up to date with your vaccines, to book an appointment visit neph.click/appointments.

Residents who live in Timiskaming District (and the Municipality of Temagami) will be able book an appointment with Northeastern Public Health 1-877-442-1212.
