πŸ”₯ FOREST FIRE DANGER IS ELEVATED IN OUR AREA πŸ”₯

As the weather warms and residents head out to camps, cottages, trails, and the bush, it's important to be aware of current forest fire conditions.

The Ontario Forest Fire Info Map is currently showing elevated to extreme fire danger ratings in areas surrounding Timmins and Northeastern Ontario. Under these conditions, a single spark can quickly develop into a fast-moving wildfire.

Before heading outdoors:

βœ… Check current fire danger ratings and restrictions
βœ… Never leave a campfire unattended
βœ… Completely extinguish campfires with water until cool to the touch
βœ… Avoid tossing cigarette butts on the ground
βœ… Keep vehicles and ATVs away from dry grass and brush
βœ… Carry water or a fire extinguisher when possible
βœ… Report any signs of wildfire immediately

Wildfires can threaten homes, camps, businesses, critical infrastructure, and place firefighters at significant risk. Prevention is everyone's responsibility.

Stay informed. Stay prepared. Stay safe.

Be aware of the new forest fire in the region. Please give the MNRF room to work in the area.

πŸš’ Do You Know What a Pumper Fire Truck Does? πŸš’

When most people think of the fire department, they picture a fire truck responding to a fire. While that's certainly part of the job, pumper trucks are used for much more than fighting fires.

A pumper truck is the backbone of the fire service. These apparatus carry firefighters, water, pumps, hose, medical equipment, and specialized tools needed to respond to a wide variety of emergencies.

Our pumper crews respond to:
πŸ”₯ Structure fires
πŸš— Motor vehicle collisions
🚨 Fire alarms
🩺 Medical emergencies
🏠 Carbon monoxide and smoke alarm calls
⚠️ Public assistance and rescue incidents

These trucks and the firefighters who staff them are ready to respond 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to help protect our community.

Every call is different, but every response starts with trained firefighters and reliable equipment working together to keep the citizens of Timmins safe.

Have you ever wondered what equipment is carried on a pumper truck? Let us know in the comments, and we may feature it in a future post!

πŸ•οΈ FIRE SAFETY DOESN'T TAKE A VACATION πŸš’

Whether you're spending the weekend at a cottage, in a camper trailer, or enjoying the outdoors at your favorite campground, fire safety remains just as important away from home.

Many people don't realize that Ontario law requires working smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms in cottages, seasonal residences, and trailers where fuel-burning appliances are present or where there is sleeping accommodation.

βœ”οΈ Test your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms before your trip.
βœ”οΈ Replace batteries when needed.
βœ”οΈ Ensure alarms are installed in the proper locations.
βœ”οΈ Have an escape plan and make sure everyone knows it.

A fire or carbon monoxide emergency can happen anywhere, and early warning saves lives. Take a few minutes to make sure your family and friends are protected before you relax and enjoy your time away.

Stay safe and have a great camping season!

πŸš’πŸ”₯ FIRE SAFETY STARTS WITH YOU πŸ”₯πŸš’

Every year, firefighters respond to preventable emergencies caused by simple hazards in the home.

Take a few minutes today to protect your family:

βœ… Test your smoke alarms monthly
βœ… Install smoke and carbon monoxide alarms on every level of your home
βœ… Create and practice a home escape plan
βœ… Keep cooking areas clear of anything that can burn
βœ… Never leave cooking unattended
βœ… Ensure fire hydrants near your home remain accessible year-round

Fire can double in size every 30 to 60 seconds. Early detection and a well-practiced escape plan can make all the difference.

The members of IAFF Local 535 are committed to protecting our community, but fire safety begins long before the emergency call.

Stay safe. Stay prepared.

🚨 GIVE EMERGENCY CREWS ROOM TO WORK 🚨

Earlier this week, the City of Timmins shared an important reminder about staying back from emergency scenes. Unfortunately, crews are still experiencing vehicles and bystanders getting too close while firefighters, paramedics, and police are trying to work.

When emergency personnel are on scene:

πŸš’ Slow down and move over
πŸš’ Stay well back from emergency vehicles
πŸš’ Never drive through active scenes unless directed
πŸš’ Keep sidewalks and work areas clear
πŸš’ Do not stop to record or take photos
πŸš’ Follow directions from emergency personnel at all times

Emergency scenes are unpredictable and dangerous. Firefighters may be operating hoses, rescue tools, or working in low visibility conditions while focused on saving lives and protecting property.

Getting too close not only puts the public at risk, it also puts emergency crews in danger and can delay critical operations.

We understand people are curious, but please respect the scene and give crews the space they need to do their jobs safely.

Your cooperation helps keep everyone safe.

🚨 WHEN YOU SEE A FIRE TRUCK APPROACHING 🚨

Every second counts during an emergency response. When firefighters are responding to a call, your actions on the road can help save lives.

Here’s what to do when you see or hear emergency vehicles approaching:

πŸš’ Pull safely to the right side of the road
πŸš’ Come to a complete stop
πŸš’ Stay stopped until all emergency vehicles have passed
πŸš’ Never slam on your brakes suddenly
πŸš’ Do not block intersections
πŸš’ Never try to follow or pass a fire truck responding to an emergency

At intersections:
➑️ Drivers in all directions should remain alert and yield when safe to do so.

Remember:
⚠️ Fire trucks are large, heavy vehicles that require extra distance to stop and maneuver safely.

By staying calm and giving emergency crews space, you help firefighters get where they need to go safely and quickly.

Your cooperation can make a difference when seconds matter most.
