Over the past few months, the volunteer members of the Tlell Volunteer Fire Department have been spending more and more time cleaning up garbage and abandoned items — including propane tanks, an old BBQ, and other second-hand junk — left at the community recycling area.
We want to be clear: the Fire Department does not run this recycling program. The program is operated by the Regional District, but it is located on Fire Department property as a courtesy to the community.
When people misuse the site as a dumping ground, it puts our volunteers and the public at risk, and creates safety hazards.
If this continues, we will have no choice but to request the removal of the recycling bins from the property.
Please respect the program, follow the recycling guidelines, and help keep our community safe and clean.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

Coastal Fire Centre: Category 2 and Category 3 open fire prohibition

Effective at noon Pacific Daylight Time on Friday, May 17, 2024, most open burning activities will be prohibited throughout the Coastal Fire Centre’s jurisdiction. This prohibition is being enacted to help reduce wildfire risk and protect public safety.

Category 2 and Category 3 open fires will be prohibited throughout the Coastal Fire Centre's jurisdiction. This prohibition will be in place until October 31, 2024, or until the order is rescinded.

A map of the affected areas is available online: https://ow.ly/xuTc50REHCJ

This prohibition applies to all public and private land, unless specified otherwise (e.g., in a local
government bylaw). Residents are asked to check with local government authorities for any other restrictions before lighting any fire.

Specifically, this prohibition refers to the following activities:

"category 2 open fire" which means an open fire, other than a category 1 campfire, that
1. burns material in one pile not exceeding 2 m in height and 3 m in width,
2. burns material concurrently in 2 piles each not exceeding 2 m in height and 3 m in width, or
3. burns stubble or grass over an area that does not exceed 0.2 ha.

"category 3 open fire" which means an open fire that burns
1. material concurrently in 3 or more piles each not exceeding 2 m in height and 3 m in width,
2. material in one or more piles each exceeding 2 m in height or 3 m in width,
3. one or more windrows, each not exceeding 200 m in length or 15 m in width,
4. stubble or grass over an area exceeding 0.2 ha.

Also prohibited are the activities listed below (Wildfire Act, Section 12):
• Fireworks;
• Sky Lanterns;
• Binary Exploding Targets;
• Burn Barrels or Burn Cages of any size or description; and,
• Air Curtain Burners.

This prohibition does not apply to Category 1 - Campfires that are a half-metre high by a half-metre wide or smaller, or to cooking stoves that use gas, propane, or briquettes.

Anyone lighting a campfire must maintain a fireguard by removing flammable debris from around the campfire area and have a hand tool or at least eight litres of water available nearby to properly extinguish the fire.

The Coastal Fire Centre covers all the area west of the height of land on the Coast Mountain Range from the U.S.-Canada border at Manning Park, including Tweedsmuir South Provincial Park in the north, the Sunshine Coast, the Lower Mainland, Vancouver Island, the Gulf Islands and Haida Gwaii.

Anyone found in contravention of an open fire prohibition may be issued a violation ticket for $1,150, required to pay an administrative penalty of up to $10,000 or, if convicted in court, fined up to $100,000 and/or sentenced to one year in jail. If the contravention causes or contributes to a wildfire, the person responsible may be ordered to pay all firefighting and associated costs.

To report a wildfire, unattended campfire, or open fire violation, call 1 800 663-5555 toll-free or *5555 on a cell phone. For the latest information on current wildfire activity, burning restrictions, road closures and air quality advisories, go to: http://www.bcwildfire.ca

LOCAL NEWS - On Friday, May 3 2024 at 2:00 pm, the Tlell Volunteer Fire Department responded to a small wildfire, approximately 1 km south of Tlell. Four members attended and made quick work in containing the fire and putting it out. The fire was human caused and believed to be ignited from an improperly discarded cigarette.

After a post fire investigation, it was very obvious that this was not a normal fire in nature. And truth be told, if this fire was not discovered in time, it was roughly 50 feet away from potentially becoming something a lot more. As a community, it is time for us to start a real conversation around Emergency Preparedness in general and also on how we can actively take steps to protect our homes and properties from the negative devastation of a wildfire or any other disaster.

Though we may live in a rainforest, we need to see that the wildland we have moved into has been modified through logging and has been reshaped to meet our needs, altering the preexisting natural ecosystem into a manufactured ecosystem. In doing so, our homes and businesses have become huge fuel loads, and in the face of any fire can in fact pose a huge risk to the surrounding wildland and to other structures close by. This reality poses a huge problem to a small volunteer fire department.

After much thought, the Tlell Volunteer Fire Department asks that you would consider helping us so we can help you. First of all, you can help us by having an Emergency Preparedness Plan. Having a plan and a grab and go bag, means that in an emergency, you can quickly and safely leave, allowing the fire department to rapidly move in to help those in great distress or engage any immediate threat. Secondly, is planning and implementing FireSmart in and around our homes, businesses, and communities. By applying the FireSmart principles, we can help reduce the risk of wildfire within our community, decrease the negative impact on our home, and protect your local firefighters by giving them a safer opportunity to defend your home or business. By doing these couple things, you can greatly assist us in helping you.

So, can you help us so we can help you?

For the curious at heart or the folks who wish to hike the Anvil Trial, the parking area across the highway from the entrance to the trail is a little unsafe. At this time, it might be wise to stay back. Thanks and stay safe.
