While recent rainfall has helped support local water supply conditions, Water Conservation Stage 1 remains in effect as Tofino enters its busiest time of year, when community water use increases.

Residents, businesses and visitors are encouraged to continue using water mindfully and follow all current conservation measures. Ongoing conservation will help protect the communityโ€™s water supply and reduce the likelihood of more restrictive water conservation stages.

Council will consider giving first, second, and third readings to two amendment bylaws that clarify and update the Districtโ€™s Pay Parking Program. The proposed changes would place all parking rates and permit fees within the Fees and Charges Bylaw, while keeping parking rules within the Traffic and Parking Regulation Bylaw.

The amendments would establish parking rates through 2029, clarify commercial and downtown residential permit rules, and maintain the existing downtown pay parking season. Beginning in 2030, parking rates would increase by 4% annually unless Council approves a different rate structure.

Council will consider first reading of a zoning amendment for 740 Campbell Street. The proposed zoning would support a potential 21-unit multi-family housing development on District-owned land in partnership with the Tofino Housing Corporation.

The early-stage concept includes a mix of housing units and public waterfront access for activities such as kayaking and paddleboarding. Further review is still required to assess water and sewer capacity, transportation, environmental conditions, natural hazards, and other servicing considerations before the proposal advances.

This Sunday, the District of Tofino joins communities across Canada in recognizing National Indigenous Peoples Day and celebrating the cultures, languages, histories and contributions of First Nations, Inuit and Mรฉtis peoples.

The District acknowledges with gratitude that Tofino (nฬ“aฤiqs) is located within the traditional and unceded territory of the ฦ›aส”uukสทiส”atแธฅ (Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation). The District also recognizes the deep connections of the Ahousaht and Hesquiaht First Nations to the lands and waters of Clayoquot Sound and values its ongoing relationships and collaboration with all three Nations.

National Indigenous Peoples Day also offers an opportunity to consider how respect can guide everyday actions.

The Destination Stewardship Plan, finalized last year through collaboration between the District of Tofino, Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation and Tourism Tofino, sets out a shared vision for a future grounded in respect for the land, the people and all living things.

At the heart of the plan is the ส”iisaak Pledge, which invites residents, visitors and businesses to:

โ€ข Respect Natural Law
โ€ข Act with generosity and care for community
โ€ข Speak truthfully, act honourably and learn the history of this place and its Peoples
โ€ข Leave healthy habitats undisturbed for future generations

Residents and visitors are encouraged to learn more and take the ส”iisaak Pledge.

Local businesses can also take meaningful action by becoming Tla-o-qui-aht Tribal Parks Allies, supporting stewardship, conservation and community priorities.

Take the ส”iisaak Pledge and learn more about Tla-o-qui-aht Tribal Parks at www.tribalparks.com

On National Indigenous Peoples Day, the District encourages everyone to listen, learn and consider how they can help build a future rooted in ส”iisaak: respect.

With summer approaching and bear sightings increasing, the District of Tofino is reminding residents and businesses that garbage carts are among the most common wildlife attractants in the community.

Under the Districtโ€™s Wildlife Attractant Bylaw, property owners and occupants must properly secure garbage and other attractants. Carts that are not secured may attract bears, pose risks to the surrounding neighbourhood, and could result in fines.

โœ… Best practice: Store carts indoors or in a secure shed until collection day.

When carts must be stored outside, they must be:

๐Ÿ”’ Locked at all times, except when placed out for collection
โ›“๏ธ Anchored so wildlife cannot tip, drag or open them

WildSafeBC Pacific Rim has provided the District with free supports for residents:
โ€ข Stainless steel locking carabiners, available at the District of Tofino Municipal Office
โ€ข Gift cards for anchoring materials from Windsor Plywood, available at the Municipal Office
โ€ข Electric fencing subsidies and installation support for wildlife attractants

To help conserve the communityโ€™s water supply, hereโ€™s a simple water-saving tip:

Turning off the tap while brushing teeth or shaving can save more than 8 litres of water per minute. Simple habits like these can quickly add up and help conserve thousands of litres of water over time.

Collective action across the community can make a meaningful difference and reduce pressure on Tofinoโ€™s water system during dry periods.

The District of Tofino is inviting the community to review and provide feedback on a draft Private Water Supply Policy.

The proposed policy would establish a consistent and transparent framework for reviewing private water supply systems as part of development applications. These systems may include wells, rainwater harvesting, desalination, or other treatment-based systems.

The policy aims to support responsible development, protect the communityโ€™s watershed and reduce pressure on the municipal water system during the summer and early fall, when water demand is highest.

The District of Tofino is pleased to announce it has received $25,000 in funding through the Government of Canadaโ€™s New Horizons for Seniors Program. The funding will support the continued growth of the Districtโ€™s SMILE Program (Support Meals Improving Lives of Elders), a community initiative focused on improving social connection, well-being, and quality of life for local seniors aged 55 and older.

The New Horizons for Seniors Program is a federal funding initiative that supports projects that encourage social participation, inclusion, and active living for seniors in communities across Canada.

Each Wednesday, the District hosts the SMILE Social at the Tofino Community Hall, where local seniors gather to share a chef-prepared meal and participate in a variety of activities. Weekly programming may include art workshops, movement and wellness classes, guest speakers, games, music, and peer-led skill sharing. The program regularly welcomes between 15 and 20 participants each week.

The SMILE Program is free and open to all seniors in the community, with no registration required.

For seniors unable to attend in person, the District continues to partner with the Better at Home Program, delivered through the Pacific Rim Hospice Society, to provide soup delivery and friendly visits. Through this collaboration, approximately 10 to 20 seniors receive meals and social support each week.

Funding from the New Horizons for Seniors Program will help cover program expenses, including food supplies, honoraria for chefs and presenters, activity materials, and special seasonal events and outings.

With renovations to the Tofino Community Hall kitchen anticipated to be complete in June, the grant will also support the introduction of expanded culinary programming and new food-focused opportunities within the upgraded facility. These additions are expected to create more opportunities for seniors to gather, learn new skills, share meals, and strengthen social connections within the community.
