Students for Free Speech York U - SFS YorkU This is the official page of Students in Support of Free Speech at York University.

We are a non-partisan free speech club with an emphasis on open dialogue between political ideologies and matters of personal freedom. We are a group of students who care about facilitating free and responsible discourse. Standing by the ideas of former ACLU President Nadine Strossen, SFS stands against censorship, believing that the best way to go forward is to allow for more discourse than one-s

ided action on any side. At SFS, we hope to provide students a safe space where ideals are challenged, never berated or silenced. SFS hosts a variety of events to do with the use of responsible and free speech, some which are open debates, speaker panels and movie screenings - all of which, put the use of responsible use of free speech at the centre. SFS also stands strongly in support of the people of countries where Free Speech has been targeted, censored or even banned. We always host events in the case that a censorship laws are passed in any and all countries and regions. If you are looking for a place where ideas, notions and ideologies are debated, discussed and challenged, and where you can stand against censorship and to protect the fundamental human rights of freedom of speech, we would love to have you.

It is with a heavy heart that Students For Liberty informs you that our student leader and civil rights activist, Piotr Markiełaŭ, has been once again arrested and jailed by the Belarusian authorities.

Piotr Markiełaŭ was detained on November 15, 2020, when he, together with thousands of Belarusian activists, went into the streets to commemorate Roman Bondarenko, a Belarusian artist who was severely beaten by unknown plain-clothes police officers in masks on November 11 and died the following day. Over a thousand activists were arrested for engaging in an unsanctioned rally.

On November 18, 2020, Piotr Markiełaŭ was sentenced to 15 days in prison under article 23.34 of the Administrative Code of Belarus for violating the rules of conduct of public gatherings. As a common rule, Piotr’s lawyer is denied visiting rights.

Students For Liberty joins the international community in their call to demand the immediate release of Piotr Markiełaŭ and all political prisoners and civil rights activists in Belarus.

We call for the European Community to resume their call for Belarusian authorities to stop the violence and inhumane treatment of the peaceful activists and civilians who support the movement.

Help us spread the word by demanding freedom and justice for Piotr.

Operation Fox Hunt was ostensibly launched as an anti-corruption campaign by Mr. Xi that targeted wealthy citizens and corrupt Communist Party members, who had fled overseas with large amounts.

However, FBI director Christopher Wray said in July that Operation Fox Hunt’s principal aim now is to suppress dissent among the Chinese diaspora. He called Fox Hunt nothing more than a sweeping bid by Mr. Xi to “target Chinese nationals who he sees as threats and who live outside China, around the world.”

The Canadian Security Intelligence Service says Beijing uses proxies to threaten Canada’s Chinese community in an effort to silence President Xi Jinping’s critics

"Popular Indian jewellery brand Tanishq has withdrawn an advertisement featuring an interfaith couple after a right-wing backlash on social media.

Opponents of the advert say it promotes "love jihad", a term radical Hindu groups use to accuse Muslim men of converting Hindu women by marriage."

The Tanishq ad was criticised on social media for showing an Indian interfaith marriage baby shower.
