🏗️ From Broken to Better in the News

Our From Broken to Better campaign was recently featured in People’s Voice, highlighting the need to bring Nova Scotia’s labour standards up to date.

Nova Scotia’s Labour Standards Code hasn’t had a major overhaul since 1989! Work has changed a lot since then, but the basic protections workers receive have not kept up.

In 2025, the Halifax Workers’ Action Centre spoke with hundreds of workers across the province, particularly in retail, hospitality and non-union construction. We heard about wage and tip theft, retaliation, discrimination and barriers to enforcing basic workplace rights. Many workers don't file complaints at all because they are worried about what will happen to their jobs.

This spring, the WAC joined the Nova Scotia Federation of Labour and Justice for Workers Nova Scotia to launch From Broken to Better, calling for six changes to the Labour Standards Code:

✊ An end to no-cause termination after one year of full-time employment
🤒 10 paid sick days
💰 An end to tip theft
⏰ A 40-hour work week, with overtime after 40 hours
📅 Two weeks’ advance notice of schedules
🗓️ More paid statutory holidays

Workers in other provinces already have many of these protections. Nova Scotian workers deserve labour laws that reflect the realities of work TODAY, not 1989
