Brothers and Sisters, I am running for Business Manager on the platform "For The Members 46". It's not just a cliché, it's a promise I intend to keep. Our members' voices need to be heard, as they are the back bone of our local. Total honesty and transparency is much needed to get back the trust of the membership. I believe the mending will start with me being elected as your Business Manager.
Working tirelessly for the membership is what I will do; as I have always done. I will give my full support to the Local 46 Committees and Boards. I will make the office of Business Manager accessible to all members. I will nurture a good working relationship through communication, education and training that will make Local 46 effective for the membership.
Some have implied that I aspire to go to the International, this could not be further from the truth. I have always been 46 and will always remain 46.

Fraternally yours,

Robert Brooker

Retiree Info:

Are you retired or ready to retire? Members pay attention to what our Financial Secretary Treasurer arbitrarily does with your employers hourly $9.00 contribution if you have to go back to work after retiring. Under the collective agreement the employer contributes $9.00/hr pension to Local 46 on your behalf. You as a member do not see any benefit of this. Brother DiMaso diverts it to the Health and Welfare slush fund.

Our thought is, would this pass the test if there were a legal challenge, to Brother DiMaso arbitrarily taking away contributions made on behalf as a member and diverting to a slush fund under the law.

One would think if a contribution is made on behalf of a member, that contribution should be theirs and they should benefit from it. If the contribution cannot be made to their pension per new income tax regulations, maybe those contributions could go into an hour bank for health benefits for that retired member, or at the very least be added to their pay cheque like the paid officers.

One would think that Financial Secretary Treasurer DiMaso would be more in tune with helping our retirees and see that they get some benefit from the $9.00 per hour. Seam like a double standard? The membership contributes 28% of his gross per week to the International Pension Plan on Brother DiMaso's behalf and he receives the $9.00/hr pension times 45 hours for a total of $405.00 tax free weekly on his pay cheque.

Our pension and benefit plans, along with all other investments, lost a considerable amount of money in 2022. When asked at a monthly membership meeting how much, Brother Joe DiMaso said 11%, which is 150+ million dollars. The Trustees decided to increase pension benefit payments; a long overdue increase since the last one of 2002. In a blatant disregard of advice from our advisors at Segal & Co; who recommended a conservative 2% increase, Brothers DiMaso and Griffiths were pushing for 8%, obviously a move to garner more votes for this election. The majority of the Trustees chose the side of caution with a 4% increase. Chairman of the Trustees and Financial Secretary Treasurer, Joe DiMaso, decided to enact this pension increase on May 1, 2023, along with a separate payment retroactive from January 1, 2023. The timing was not coincidental considering it was several weeks prior to this election. The problem with this increase is that it may not be sustainable with our current losses and a looming recession. Our membership may not be able to contribute into our plans due to lack of work. Our financial cushion may not be able to sustain the pressure of this increase and may put us in a default position - affecting active members and possibly raising the retirement age or clawing back the raise from our pensioners. Brothers Griffiths and DiMaso only want one more term, they don't care as they won't be the ones left to address these issues in the future.

In a blatant move disregarding elected officers who have been voted by the membership, Business Manager, Dave Griffiths, has taken away the responsibility of the area from Business Agent, Steve Marshall, and given it to Eddy Panetta. This doubles Eddy's responsibility area and allows Dave Griffiths and Joe DiMaso to campaign on company time in Eddy's larger area.
This typical retribution by Dave Griffiths does not serve our members needs at all and increases his personal needs for election purposes only.

In his mailed out flyer, Financial Secretary Treasurer, Joe DiMaso, Boasts about establishing a Bereavement Fund. The Bereavement Fund was introduced as a motion by Robert Brooker as Motion NO.4 and was printed in the March and April editions of the Trade Wind of 2017. Almost a year later, in his report in the Trade Wind of January, 2018, Joe DiMaso stated: "The Business Manager (Robert Brooker) had motioned a study regarding a potential bereavement fund, which financially we will be able to move forward with. I anticipate action on this sometime this year." That action took place 5 years later due to the ineffective management of Joe DiMaso. Our membership could have received this benefit 5 years sooner if it weren't for the apparent toxic relationship between the Financial Secretary Treasurer and his office staff.

The Financial Secretary Treasurer has many responsibilities which include depositing Local Union funds, paying Local Union obligations, and handling all money and property for which he is responsible, in accordance with the laws and policies of the Local Union. The Financial Secretary Treasurer has a support staff to help with the many responsibilities that he must manage.
It has come to light that our current Financial Secretary Treasurer, Joe DiMaso, has been charged multiple times with harassment. He has been legally defended and the claimants are bound by Non-Disclosure Agreements (NDAs) to remain silent. We have paid for this poor behaviour in legal fees and compensation packages; which is a waste of union money and resources.
Our union has lost good people as a result of the actions of our current Financial Secretary Treasurer. It is time to replace this current Financial Secretary Treasurer, Joe DiMaso, in order to move forward for the best interests of our local.

Our current Business Manager, Dave Griffiths, is endorsing virtually no one in this election. There are only 5 candidates on his slate. Whether it's a case of Dave Griffiths not willing to support any other candidates or them not willing to support him. This is a sad reflection of his leadership.
Others from his previous elected team have been campaigning individually with no affiliation to him whatsoever.
We need a leader who can create and work with a diverse team to represent all aspects of our local. There is only one choice, and that is Rob Brooker.

Our Business Manager, Dave Griffiths, and Financial Secretary Treasurer, Joe DiMaso, are currently campaigning together on job sites as a way to reach out for votes. They have little support from Business Representatives. They are campaigning on union time, using union resources. They claim they are using vacation time for this purpose yet they receive 3-4 weeks paid vacation each. We are still paying for their self-serving campaign whichever way they try to spin it! Let's stop this double dipping and elect proper representation for local 46 who are for the members 46. Share this page!

By now, most of you will have received bios of the candidates. This is not a popularity contest; review the candidates thoroughly who you believe will best serve you. We have amassed a team who we feel will best serve this purpose. Ours is the most comprehensive team providing years of service and experience for the members of local 46. From Business Manager, Rob Brooker, down to Boards and Committees, your voices will be heard, tell us what you think!

Our local is clearly divided. We are being fed misinformation or half-truths with major omissions. Any criticisms are followed with swift retribution towards any opponents. We need to lay out the truth to re-unite our local to make it strong again.

05/13/2023

This page is dedicated for the members of Local 46 who believe that our local should be united, not divided like it has been for the last 2 years. The purpose of this page is to provide an honest outlet for the members of Local 46 to deliver factual information of the events of the last few years of our current administration.
