What happens when past trauma meets the postpartum period?
A new study from examined how traumatic brain injury (TBI) and interpersonal violence are linked to postpartum mental health outcomes. Researchers found that individuals with a history of both TBI and interpersonal violence had the highest risk of new and severe mental illness after childbirth.
“These findings show the need to implement healthcare and social supports for new parents with TBI and histories of interpersonal violence that are trauma-informed, person-centred, and culturally sensitive,” said Dr. Hilary Brown, Senior Adjunct Scientist at ICES and Associate Professor in the Department of Health and Society at the University of Toronto Scarborough, and lead author of the study.
The findings highlight the importance of recognizing experiences of trauma and ensuring postpartum mental health supports are tailored to the needs of new parents.
