📜 George Elliott Clarke is a poet, playwright, literary critic, and professor who has served as the Poet Laureate of Toronto from 2012 to 2015 and as the Canadian Parliamentary Poet Laureate in 2016–2017. His work as a poet and scholar draws on the history, culture and experience of Africadian communities in Atlantic Canada. Over the course of his career, he has authored numerous poetry collections, including Whylah Falls and Canticles I (MMXVII), as well as two novels, George & Rue and The Motorcyclist. Clarke’s recent work is a multimedia performance series, Five Poets Breaking Into Song, which features the original musical work he commissioned from a cross-section of composers inspired by the work of many Canadian poets. Clarke’s work has been foundational to the study of African-Canadian literature, and he has been the recipient of numerous awards and honours over his lengthy career.
