September 30 marks the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, a day to honour the Indigenous children who never returned home from residential schools, Survivors, their families, and communities.

The National Council of Canadian Tamils (NCCT) stands in solidarity with First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples. We recognize the lasting harms of Canada’s residential school system and the ongoing impacts of colonialism, while honouring the strength, cultures, languages, and leadership of Indigenous Peoples.

As Tamil Canadians, our experiences of displacement, injustice, and intergenerational trauma deepen our commitment to listening and standing alongside communities seeking justice. We approach this responsibility with humility and respect for the distinct histories and experiences of Indigenous Peoples.

Reconciliation requires sustained action: learning the truth, challenging prejudice, respecting Indigenous rights and treaties, and supporting Indigenous-led efforts toward justice and healing.

Today, NCCT encourages our community to make time to learn from Indigenous voices, engage with local Indigenous initiatives, and carry these commitments into our everyday lives.

We remember the children. We honour Survivors. We commit to walking forward with respect, accountability, and solidarity.

Thank you to the Mayor of Brampton, Patrick Brown, for standing with the Tamil community and supporting the Eelam Tamil people’s right to remember, commemorate, and preserve their collective memory.

Following the removal of the Thiyaga Theepam Thileepan memorial statue in Nallur, Jaffna, NCCT continues to call for its immediate return and restoration and for the fundamental right of Eelam Tamil people to commemorate and memorialize those they choose to honour to be respected.

We sincerely appreciate Mayor Brown’s continued support and solidarity with the Tamil community.
