Well this is a site for sore eyes. On my travels I passed this bench with this breath taking statue on it. When I looked closer I recognized that the statue is actually a representation of Jesus. In the minus 20 I started to ponder what was going through the artists mind. Why is Jesus outside the church? Is it a commentary on a quote often used to bring people into the church. “Behold I stand at the door and knock…” That verse is actually about Jesus saying to the church hey I’m here… please let me in! That would be a strange statement for a church to make. Well I decided to look up the artist. Homeless Jesus was designed by Timothy Schmalz, a Canadian sculptor and devout Catholic. Schmalz was inspired to create the statue after seeing a homeless person sleeping on a park bench in Toronto in 2012. Schmalz visited Pope Francis in Vatican City in November 2013 to present a miniature version of his statue. He recalled the Pope's reaction, "He walked over to the sculpture, and it was just chilling because he touched the knee of the Jesus the Homeless sculpture, and closed his eyes and prayed." Schmalz says “The Homeless Jesus brings Jesus down off the cross and into a relatable human context that allows people to feel a greater closeness with and accessibility to Christ.” Isn’t that the hope of what we do on a Thursday? Through The Sharing Place we get to be the hands and feet of Jesus helping out in a practical way to our neighbours in need. Some whom do spend their nights on park benches. They are not alone though. When looking up the art I came across a few other photos. One in particular. A man, who finds himself at the end of the bench, but then leans over to rest on the legs of Jesus. Here I am preoccupied with trying to figure out the meaning of this art and this gentleman simply gets it. Like Martha I miss it. Like Mary, at the feet of Jesus, he chooses the most wisely. "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest." (Jesus!) Be well my Sharing Place friends!
