This is our new bulletin board. The idea is to let all our guests know about the variety of our programs we offer. There are a variety of other services in our neighbourhood as well as partnering churches. So we will do our best to keep everyone updated. In the meantime we fill our blank space with our good and faithful night doorman. Please remember him in prayer as he would like and really needs more hours at work.

Last night in our open talk I shared from Our Daily Bread Ministries. (https://ourdailybreadministries.ca/2026/18/03/made-for-community/) If you’re not familiar with that it is a site that offers short devotionals and or reading plans for people who are looking to try and get some inspiration from the Bible. Anyways yesterday in particular was a good one so I shared it because it was about community. In particular one verse which encourages us that “A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.” We all need food. We all need clothing. We need support. We need each other. As one church was there to help us serve the people I was able to share that community is something that can help us get through the toughest times. In a Facebook posts I cannot share enough how much I’ve seen lives changed simply by being around others and by coming together to serve. It’s great to be apart of that. If you’re not part of a community of people who support you I encourage you to visit or find a place in your own area that can help you while also be a place where you get to use your God given gift to serve others. We all are better together.

This morning I woke up and a volunteer sent me this message….”did you know about this?” No I didn’t. Yet isn’t it a blessing to be the recipients of this community effort. God speed my good friends.

Wait a second. Is that “hey, wait for me!” person a cartoon of me? This grey life is getting real.

Talk about salt of the world individuals. These two are guests to The Sharing Place. One of them helps volunteers at another food bank and the other helped to organize a Saturday morning ball hockey league. Now I don’t think I can do justice with my words but this ball hockey league has been life saving for some of the people who go. People who have had a hard time in life, people who suffer addictions. “Put that beer away! Bobs been sober for six months!!!” Such an encouraging group of individuals who have come together to support each other. I am inspired to know such people who do not know the word quit. The Sharing Place is with you. Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.

Well this is a site for sore eyes. On my travels I passed this bench with this breath taking statue on it. When I looked closer I recognized that the statue is actually a representation of Jesus. In the minus 20 I started to ponder what was going through the artists mind. Why is Jesus outside the church? Is it a commentary on a quote often used to bring people into the church. “Behold I stand at the door and knock…” That verse is actually about Jesus saying to the church hey I’m here… please let me in! That would be a strange statement for a church to make. Well I decided to look up the artist. Homeless Jesus was designed by Timothy Schmalz, a Canadian sculptor and devout Catholic. Schmalz was inspired to create the statue after seeing a homeless person sleeping on a park bench in Toronto in 2012. Schmalz visited Pope Francis in Vatican City in November 2013 to present a miniature version of his statue. He recalled the Pope's reaction, "He walked over to the sculpture, and it was just chilling because he touched the knee of the Jesus the Homeless sculpture, and closed his eyes and prayed." Schmalz says “The Homeless Jesus brings Jesus down off the cross and into a relatable human context that allows people to feel a greater closeness with and accessibility to Christ.” Isn’t that the hope of what we do on a Thursday? Through The Sharing Place we get to be the hands and feet of Jesus helping out in a practical way to our neighbours in need. Some whom do spend their nights on park benches. They are not alone though. When looking up the art I came across a few other photos. One in particular. A man, who finds himself at the end of the bench, but then leans over to rest on the legs of Jesus. Here I am preoccupied with trying to figure out the meaning of this art and this gentleman simply gets it. Like Martha I miss it. Like Mary, at the feet of Jesus, he chooses the most wisely. "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest." (Jesus!) Be well my Sharing Place friends!

One of our volunteers is really multitalented. Last night I was invited to a “Fix Up Look Sharp” opening at Northern Contemporary Gallrry. The gallery was showcasing art which has been transformed. Revamped thrift store art. About a year ago we had a basement renovation done and we swapped out some art. The volunteer asked if they could have it and let me know that they were an artist and wanted to use it as a base for a new piece. Well here we are a year later and the work is all done. “Stock In The Wild” will be on display until the 17th in the front window of the gallery. It’s on sale and I was informed that the proceeds all go to The Sharing Place. It was a very nice night with lots of redeemed works. That sort of makes me think of our meals and all of us, guests or volunteers. All works in progress. Me included. As a person of faith, I believe we all can be redeemed works. Thank you Sir Andrew for your hard work:)

What’s up with that button? Brought back some trauma!!!

At The Sharing Place we used to have a gentleman named Dalton. Dalton was a marathon runner. And not just any marathon running but he ran the New York Marathon, the Boston Marathon and the LA Marathon. Dalton transitioned from being a guest to a volunteer and one day I let it slip that when I was young I used to run. Many of my own family members were gym teachers and so to spend extra time with my uncles this was how I would spend my weekends. The more I got to know Dalton the more he encouraged me. Get back to running. Before COVID I was about there and then the world stopped. Dalton has since passed. I miss my friend. But what Dalton taught me was that through discipline I could get back to it. I have run a 10k, a half, but the full marathon has alluded me. So as Dalton suggested I got a plan. I have a partner. We all need partners. And together we will get to our goal. I shared this on Thursday and there were a couple nodding heads. A few smiles. Afterwards these faces came up to me. A young mom who had gone back to school. “I did it. I got my high school diploma.” The second person. A student in an adult retraining program. “I did it. I passed my tests. Thank you for praying for me.” We all shared high fives. It’s still the beginning of the year. There’s time. But we have to make use of it. Run the race of life well. Run in such a way to win the prize.

Well that last picture tells it all. But we had a dozen people at our watch party and plenty of pancakes.
