What children often need most during time off school is connection.

Unstructured time together helps children feel safe, supported, and known.

Research shows that when children experience harm, they are most likely to tell a trusted adult in their everyday life.

What makes someone a safe adult?
• Listening without judgment
• Believing what a child shares
• Responding in ways that keep the conversation open

Children speak up when they feel emotionally safe.
And when they know they have safe adults in their lives, they’re more likely to reach out when it matters most.

One of the most powerful protective factors a child can have is a trusted adult.

But what does a “trusted adult” look like at a systemic level? And how can the adults leading digital platforms, institutions, and governments step into a protective role?

Recently, youth advocates from across Canada gathered on Parliament Hill to unveil the Youth Digital Rights Blueprint & Framework, developed with the John Humphrey Centre for Peace and Human Rights after three years of national youth dialogues.

Their message is clear: young people should not have to carry the responsibility of digital safety alone.

Many of the realities named in the Blueprint reflect patterns frontline services are increasingly supporting children and families to navigate, including:

🔹 Online sexual exploitation realities: the rise of sextortion and the proliferation of AI-generated Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM).
🔹 The intersection with offline life: digital experiences shaping young people’s daily lives, mental health, school experiences, and relationships.
🔹 The need for trauma-informed remedy: reporting and response systems that support healing, agency, and accessible justice.

As youth shared in the framework: “We don’t want to be told how to protect ourselves. We want to build a world that protects us.”

We encourage our community to explore the Blueprint and reflect on what protective leadership can look like across digital spaces.
