Meagan Bebenek Foundation Brain tumours are the leading cause of cancer-related death in children the world over.

Since 2001, Meagan Bebenek Foundation has aimed to harness the power of community to raise awareness and funds for paediatric brain tumour research in order to provide hope, and improve outcomes for affected children and their families. Join us as we raise funds, awareness and hope for those children and their families. We embark from Fort York and walk 5km to The Hospital for Sick Children then join hands in a human hug around the hospital to show support to those families inside.

THE 7% GALLERY: Meagan Bebenek Foundation's call to end the disparity of cancer research in Canada, in which childhood oncology is severely underfunded, accounting for only 7% overall.

This image of our 7% gallery depicts our founder, Denise, with the original logo when MBF was known in our first iteration as Meagan's Walk. Meagan's Walk, now known as the HUG, MBF's signature event, was born from Denise's experience losing her youngest daughter Meagan to brain cancer at the age of five.

7% Gallery - Meagan Bebenek 🩷

Meagan’s life and legacy are the heart and inspiration behind Meagan Bebenek Foundation. Her portrait in the 7% gallery is a representation of the disparity in childhood cancer research funding in Canada.

Just weeks before her fifth birthday, Meagan drew a picture of herself as a tiny angel watching over her parents — a beautiful symbol of love and strength during her fight with Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG). Even as her illness progressed, she spent her days creating handmade gifts for others, always thinking beyond herself.

Today, her compassion lives on through MBF, supporting families facing childhood brain tumours and accelerating critical research in her honour.

Together, we continue making a difference for children like Meagan — and for the families who love them.

Sherry Holmes' Story

Sherry's involvement with MBF is deeply personal.

During a routine check-up with her doctor, 19-year-old Sherry mentioned that she had been experiencing frequent headaches and migraines. Her doctor ordered an MRI scan, which revealed a large brain tumour with a cyst on top. Though non-cancerous, the size and location of the tumour presented an immediate risk, so Sherry was urgently scheduled for operation.

Just weeks earlier, Sherry had felt perfectly healthy, making the diagnosis a shock.

Fortunately, the operation was successful. Now a mother of two, Sherry has recovered fully, but the experience left a lasting impact on her life.

After learning about Meagan Bebenek Foundation through a family friend, Sherry became an ambassador for the organization.

This is what your support helps us achieve.

This study, which we helped fund, demonstrated that virtual reality (VR) rehabilitation significantly improved visual perception in children with hemianopia—a type of vision loss often caused by brain tumors.

Survival doesn’t mean the end of the road for paediatric brain tumour patients. Following treatment, many children experience long-term side effects and challenges. Thanks to you, we are helping to change the quality of care on a global scale and bringing hope to children and families whose lives are touched by a paediatric brain tumour diagnosis.

MEET JASPER ✨

Following some medical complications immediately following his birth, Jasper was diagnosed with a rare brain tumour at 8 months old. 22 months of chemotherapy soon followed.

Jasper's treatment finished eight years ago, but paediatric brain tumours have many side effects, and his diagnosis and continuing medical complexity have had profound effects on his family.

Despite this, Jasper’s medical history is only one aspect of who he is. He is also a charismatic kid with a love for making people laugh, a kid who loves to perform his dance moves for anyone who will watch, and a kid who loves to tell stories about robots.
