We are honoured to announce that Steven Summerville Expert Witness - Specialized Training, Vice President of Sentinel Security Plus, will be presenting at the 10th Anniversary International Protective Security Board Close Protection Conference in San Diego, California, December 8–11, 2026.

Steve’s presentation, "Protect the Protector,” will address an issue every executive protection professional and security organization needs to understand:

How prepared are you when your actions, training, documentation, and decisions come under legal scrutiny?

In executive protection, doing the right thing is only part of the equation. Professionals must also be able to articulate why they acted, document what occurred, demonstrate their training, and defend their decision-making.
Steve will explore critical areas including professional conduct and accountability, the art of articulation, defensible documentation, scenario-based training, duty of care, evidence preparedness, and building a culture of preparedness over convenience.

The biggest mistake in Executive Protection isn’t always a security mistake. Sometimes… it’s a professionalism mistake.

Recently, we were contacted by a studio looking to replace a close protection agent.

The reason?

The agent became too comfortable. Professional boundaries blurred, objectivity disappeared, and the role shifted from protector to friend.

What an incredible milestone.

A huge thank you to the Executive Protection Institute for traveling from New York to Canada for the first-ever 2-day Executive Protection course and helping us launch our Inaugural Class of 2026.

We had an amazing group of professionals from all walks of life law enforcement, government, healthcare, and private sector with attendees traveling in from Detroit and Montreal to be part of something special.

One decision can define your entire career.

A recent incident out of Winnipeg highlights what can happen when control is lost in a security situation. What began as a suspected shoplifting intervention escalated into an incident now being investigated as assault involving a prohibited weapon, with potential criminal charges, civil liability, and long-term reputational damage.

This wasn’t just a bad moment. It was a breakdown in judgment, training, and emotional control.

In security, composure is not optional. The expectation is clear: once a situation is under control, the use of force must stop. Anything beyond that is no longer protection, it becomes liability.

There are a few important takeaways from this:

Control must always come before aggression.
Training must override instinct.
Professionalism must outweigh ego.

When those principles are not followed, the consequences extend far beyond a single incident.

For companies and clients, this raises an equally important question. If your security provider cannot clearly demonstrate structured use-of-force training, de-escalation protocols, and documented, court-defensible standards, you are not just hiring a service, you are assuming risk.
