How are Canadian close protection agents perceived by their American and international counterparts?

The honest answer may surprise some people.

After many conversations with respected professionals outside Canada, one perception continues to surface: Canada remains behind many of its international counterparts in close protection.

That is not an attack on Canadian professionals. It is a challenge to our industry.

An agency licence may allow a company to offer protective services, but it does not automatically establish close protection competency.

Looking professional in a suit, remaining alert and being aware are important foundations. But experienced professionals recognize the difference immediately.

They see it in movement, positioning, communication, terminology, advance work, protective formations, team coordination and decision-making under pressure.

Those abilities cannot be imitated. They are developed through credible training, mentorship, repetition and operational experience.

This becomes especially important during major events such as the Toronto International Film Festival. Many high-profile individuals will receive protection. Some teams will be trained, tested and validated. Others may simply look the part.

If nothing happens, weaknesses may never be exposed. But when an incident occurs, everyone quickly discovers who was truly prepared.

We take that responsibility extremely seriously.

This week, our agents came together for operational briefings, tabletop scenarios and detailed discussions led by professionals with advanced industry knowledge.

Our objective was not simply to prepare for another assignment. It was to reinforce the mindset, discipline and accountability required to represent this profession properly.

We’ve come a long way.

Sentinel has grown into an organization trusted by many clients and driven by a purpose that goes beyond security. We want to create safer environments while helping raise the standard of our industry through professionalism, teamwork and empathy.

Growth is an incredible blessing, but it also requires change. What worked at one stage may not work at the next. As we move forward, we must continue adapting, challenging ourselves and becoming better leaders.

Talent matters, but talent alone is never enough. Success also depends on trust, leadership, shared purpose and the ability to work together.

I’m grateful for the amazing people at Sentinel who continue to support me, challenge me and help our organization grow. Our people are the heart of Sentinel. They care about the work they do, the people they protect and the standard they represent.

We are honoured to announce that Steven Summerville Expert Witness - Specialized Training, Vice President of Sentinel Security Plus, will be presenting at the 10th Anniversary International Protective Security Board Close Protection Conference in San Diego, California, December 8–11, 2026.

Steve’s presentation, "Protect the Protector,” will address an issue every executive protection professional and security organization needs to understand:

How prepared are you when your actions, training, documentation, and decisions come under legal scrutiny?

In executive protection, doing the right thing is only part of the equation. Professionals must also be able to articulate why they acted, document what occurred, demonstrate their training, and defend their decision-making.
Steve will explore critical areas including professional conduct and accountability, the art of articulation, defensible documentation, scenario-based training, duty of care, evidence preparedness, and building a culture of preparedness over convenience.

The objective is simple:

The biggest mistake in Executive Protection isn’t always a security mistake. Sometimes… it’s a professionalism mistake.

Recently, we were contacted by a studio looking to replace a close protection agent.

The reason?

The agent became too comfortable. Professional boundaries blurred, objectivity disappeared, and the role shifted from protector to friend.

What an incredible milestone.

A huge thank you to the Executive Protection Institute for traveling from New York to Canada for the first-ever 2-day Executive Protection course and helping us launch our Inaugural Class of 2026.

One decision can define your entire career.

A recent incident out of Winnipeg highlights what can happen when control is lost in a security situation. What began as a suspected shoplifting intervention escalated into an incident now being investigated as assault involving a prohibited weapon, with potential criminal charges, civil liability, and long-term reputational damage.

This wasn’t just a bad moment. It was a breakdown in judgment, training, and emotional control.

In security, composure is not optional. The expectation is clear: once a situation is under control, the use of force must stop. Anything beyond that is no longer protection, it becomes liability.

There are a few important takeaways from this:

Control must always come before aggression.
Training must override instinct.
Professionalism must outweigh ego.

When those principles are not followed, the consequences extend far beyond a single incident.

For companies and clients, this raises an equally important question. If your security provider cannot clearly demonstrate structured use-of-force training, de-escalation protocols, and documented, court-defensible standards, you are not just hiring a service, you are assuming risk.
