Imagine swimming 20 metres from shore and seeing a Jet Ski heading straight for you. Your immediate thought isn't about bylaws, it’s about your safety.

So, what are the actual rules for motorized boats and personal watercraft's near Toronto beaches?

You can't bring them up onto the sand to park it.

There are also exclusion zones where they need maintain a mandatory distance from the shore. Those distances are 150 metres at Humber Bay Shores, Kew-Balmy Beach, Woodbine Beach, and 200 metres at Hanlan's Point Beach. To put that into perspective, 150 to 200 metres is roughly 1.5 football fields.

Why the huge gap? It's a buffer zone for safety to keep fast-moving boats separated from swimmers.

Create a yard you'll love in every season.

Planting native trees and shrubs can transform your outdoor space for years to come, whether you're hoping to create more privacy, enjoy cooling shade or add beautiful colour from spring through fall.

Our partner LEAF - Local Enhancement and Appreciation of Forests makes it easy for Toronto residents to get started. LEAF arborists will help you choose the right native trees and shrubs for your property, then deliver and plant them for you.

Book your consultation online at www.yourleaf.org

With today’s ongoing heavy rains and extreme weather, the City is taking precautions to ensure resident and staff safety. Only select wading pools were open today with safety measures in place, and closed at 4:30 pm. All outdoors pools closed at 6 pm. Waterfront supervision at Toronto beaches remained in place until 7 p.m.

Reminder: it's unsafe to swim in the lake at least 48 hours after heavy rain.
